HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.      ANNOUNCEMENT: Dine and Chat:
The Honors Program is instituting a new monthly event for students. Dine and Chat is an opportunity for 12 students to have dinner with a UF faculty member and engage in conversation about academics, culture, and anything else that comes up. Each month's professor has the option to set a topic in advance, and perhaps even suggest some background reading, to get the banter going. Here are the details for the inaugural event:

Dr. Kevin Knudson, Director, University Honors Program, and Professor of Mathematics.
Wednesday, September 23, at 6:30pm.
Location to be determined.
Topic:  The Future of Honors at UF.

So, by now you're wondering how you get in on this. Come by the Honors office in 118 Hume Hall and put your name into the bowl (ask the staff at the front desk). Twelve names will be drawn from the bowl on Friday, September 18 at 3:00pm. You must put your e-mail address on your slip of paper so that we may contact you if your name is chosen. The dinner venue will be announced at that time.

2.      ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: Degree Audit Workshop:
Wondering how to find out what gen ed courses you are still missing? Want to know how to find your tracking requirements? Interested in looking at requirements for other majors or minors? Come to a degree audit workshop! Melissa will teach you all you need to know about reading your degree audits during two workshops next Wednesday, September 9 during 4th period or 9th period in 119 Hume. Geared especially for first-year students, but all students are welcome. Seating is limited, so please e-mail Melissa at [log in to unmask] to register. Include the period of the workshop you plan to attend. You will need to bring a copy of your degree audit from ISIS as a reference.

5.      ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Gainesville Tour (NEW POSTING):
Do you want to gain experience in your concentration? Do you want an opportunity for a rewarding internship? Would you like to achieve this through giving back to your community? Service Ambassadors is hosting a free tour of Gainesville's organizations that want YOU to help! Meet us outside Peabody Hall at noon on Thursday, September 10 to discover where you can be of help in your town while gaining experience for your major. 6.      ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Peace Corps Education GlobeTalk (NEW POSTING):
Do you have a desire to help others around the world? Do you think teaching is one of the ways you can contribute? Think Peace Corps!

Learn what it is like to teach in another country and help shape young lives at our Education GlobeTalk.

7.      ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Education College Council Back to School Bash:
Ready to get involved and have some fun? Check out the student organizations the College of Education has to offer at the Back to School Bash! We will be in the Norman Courtyard on Tuesday, September 8 at 7:00pm. There will be fun, information, and most importantly free food!

8.      RESEARCH: Ecological Genetics Field Study in China:
The University of Georgia is sponsoring an NSF-funded program focused on studying the ecological genetics of invasive species exchanged between the southeastern U.S. and China. The program combines research, graduate student training, and a unique opportunity for 10 U.S. undergraduates to study ecological genetics and intensive Chinese language and culture.

Students selected for the program will enroll full-time at the University of Georgia during the spring semester and take 2 courses in intensive Mandarin Chinese language and culture and 1 lab course in ecological genetics. During the summer, students travel to China where they spend 8 weeks in an OTS-style research experience - you will travel all around the country, focusing on the problem of invasive species. Students have the option of adding a 3-week internship in the lab of one of their Chinese colleagues.

The major cost of the program is in tuition and fees for enrolling at the University of Georgia for the spring and summer semesters, although students accepted into the program will pay in-state tuition. The airfare, room and board, and local transportation in China are covered for you. The only summer costs are your visa fees (~$150), spending money, and insurance ($1/day).

This program is looking for students at any level who ideally have some background in evolution and ecology and who have some interest in conservation genetics and the study of invasive species. 9.      VOLUNTEER: Unite for Sight:
Did you know that 80% of the world's blindness is preventable, or that over 41 million Americans do not have health care insurance? Unite for Sight is a non-profit organization that empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness. Volunteers have the opportunity to provide free vision screenings and participate in vision education programs which are held in community centers such as homeless shelters, soup kitchens, schools, libraries, and health clinics. Volunteers also have the opportunity to visit the underserved populations in developing nations, where they work with partner eye clinics to implement screening and free surgery programs.

If you are interested in joining Unite for Sight and gaining some hands-on volunteer experience, come to the informational meeting next Tuesday, September 8. The meeting is at 7:30pm in the Reitz Union, Room 346.

10.     VOLUNTEER: Golden Door Initiative:
Citizens for Social Justice is a student-run non-profit organization. One of our programs, the Golden Door Initiative, is an innovative transitional housing and holistic educational program for homeless individuals. Our program aims to place currently homeless individuals in a healthy and constructive living environment while providing them with the resources necessary to realize their own goals, and chart a path towards accomplishing them.

We have currently taken on 8 homeless individuals for 2009. We had our first successful semester last Spring, and we are looking for compassionate students who would be willing to dedicate a slot of time once per week to individually mentor one of our residents in various subject areas. Student mentors will receive training in order to maintain levels of personal safety at all times.

11.     VOLUNTEER: Game Day Recycling Volunteer Opportunity:
The Gator Green Team Home Game Recycling Program is gearing up for another exciting season of Gator football. Come between noon and 8:00pm to enjoy the tailgating atmosphere before the game while helping UF reduce its environmental impact. You can even earn money for the club of your choice. 12.     LEADERSHIP: Freshmen Leadership Engineering Group (NEW POSTING):
The Freshmen Leadership Engineering Group (FLEG) will begin recruitment on Wednesday, September 9 and will last through Monday, September 14. To be eligible, freshmen must attend 3 out of the following 5 events as well as fill out an application that they will learn more about at an event.

Wednesday- Meet and Greet at Moe's/Chili's on campus (7:30-9:00pm).
Thursday- Scavenger Hunt starting at the French Fries by Marston (6:00-8:00pm).
Friday- Lunch at Reitz (11:45am-1:45pm).
Sunday- Bowling at Reitz (3:45-6:00pm).
Monday- Formal Meet and Greet at Graham Gallery (7:30-9:00pm).

FLEG focuses on freshmen leadership, career development, and retention in the engineering college while making friends and having fun.

13.     LEADERSHIP: Florida Blue Key Speaker's Bureau Staff Applications (NEW POSTING):
The Florida Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament is looking for dedicated staff members to help work one of the most prestigious speech and debate tournaments in the country. The tournament, which takes place October 30 to November 1, needs hard-working individuals looking to make an impact. If you are interested in this opportunity, pick up a staff application in the Blue Key office in room 384 of the Reitz Union. 14.     LEADERSHIP: Freshman Leadership Council:
What better way to start your freshman year than by getting involved with one of the most unique organizations on campus!

The Freshman Leadership Council's mission is to provide personal, professional, and leadership growth opportunities for a select group of freshmen students through networking, programming, and educational experiences that impact the University of Florida student body and surrounding community.

15.     LEADERSHIP: Center for Leadership and Service Resource Executive Board Applications:
The mission of the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) is to engage students and cultivate opportunities for personal and academic achievement to prepare students to become leaders in the service of the global community. The Center for Leadership and Service is looking for dedicated students to fill leadership roles in the continuous development of our office.

As the official Ambassadors to the Center for Leadership and Service, the Resource Executive Board assists student-run organizations on campus by providing trainings as well as serving our fellow students who are looking to gain resources.

16.     LEADERSHIP: The Dynamo: Co-Found a Think Tank:
Would you be interested in co-founding a think tank? The Dynamo, UF's only student think tank, is lead by 4 Reitz Scholars. We are seeking a few more intellectuals and service-minded students to join us. We know honors students are busy - so time commitment is minimal: attend a one-hour meeting every two weeks, and a bit of independent work over the semester.

We do three things to advance a fair global economy: (1) publish original policy research through peer-reviewed venues, (2) host and film roundtable discussions, and (3) post blogs at http://www.TheDynamo.org

17.     LEADERSHIP: Student Honor Court Vice Chancellor Applications (TODAY):
Student Honor Court is now accepting applications for vice chancellor. Vice chancellor is a major leadership position; applicants should be willing to assist the Honor Court Chancellor in presiding over student conduct committee hearings, proctoring exams, promoting Honor Code awareness, and working with UF applicants with academic dishonesty records.

18.     LEADERSHIP: Reitz Union Board Applications (TODAY):
Interested in joining RUB Entertainment, the student organization that brings you cool bands, the best movies, hilarious comedians and awesome events, all for free? 19.     LEADERSHIP: Gator Student Investment Fund Applications:
The University of Florida's student-managed investment fund is in search of talented students to fill sector analyst positions for the inaugural semester of the Gator Student Investment Fund. We are seeking highly motivated individuals who have a strong interest in investing real money in the financial markets. Students will have the opportunity to participate in real world stock analysis and investing.

20.     ANNOUNCEMENT: Open Positions on UF Trial Team:
The Trial Team at the University of Florida is pleased to announce the availability of open positions for the 2009-2010 competitive mock trial team. The Trial Team at UF is an educational organization which instructs members in the procedures and practices of competitive mock trial for the purposes of participating in regional and national tournaments of the American Mock Trial Association. (AMTA)

More affectionately known as the "Litigators", the Trial Team at UF offers students a unique opportunity to enrich their collegiate experience by engaging in trial simulations. While it is focused on preparing students for the rigors of a career in the field of law, the Trial Team at UF is open to UF students of all majors and professional interests. No previous experience is required; only a willingness to learn and a desire to have fun.

In addition to becoming a member of this prestigious institution, participating in mock trial provides a number of academic, professional, and social benefits. Mock trial helps develop analytical reasoning, public speaking skills, and ability to work cohesively in a team. Moreover, mock trial helps students develop professional contacts with members of the legal community, familiarizes them with the American legal system and trial court procedures, as well as aides them in preparing for their future careers, legal or otherwise. In addition, mock trial teaches students about the value of professionalism, the need for thorough preparation, and the importance of ethical behavior and fair play. But most importantly mock trial is fun! It is a great place to gain new friends and make new memories.

The Trial Team at UF will be hosting an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00pm, in Pugh Hall. Tryout opportunities will begin Sunday September 13, 6:00-9:00pm, in the Reitz Union and will continue on Monday, September 14, 6:00-10:00pm, in the Reitz Union. 21.     ANNOUNCEMENT: Ultimate Frisbee Clinic:
The UF men's and women's ultimate frisbee teams will be hosting a clinic for anyone wanting to learn more about the sport. Even if you just want to be a better intramural player, come learn some strategy behind the game, improve your throws, and play a fun co-ed scrimmage. All you need is a light and dark colored shirt and cleats or running shoes. The event will be from 3:00-6:00pm on Sunday, September 6 on Lake Alice field.

22.     ANNOUNCEMENT: UF Sitcom Premier (TODAY):
Theatre Strike Force, in conjunction will IRHA, will air the first episode of its college-based sitcom, "Oppie's Friend Gene", this Friday at 8:30pm on channel 8.  The show is made for students by students, and will only be aired on campus!

Busy at that time?  It will also air Sunday and Tuesday at 8:30pm!

23.     STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Golden Key International Honour Society (NEW POSTING):
Golden Key is an honor society that inducts the top 15% of UF's students each semester. Our first general meeting will be on Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00pm in New Physics Building (NPB) 1002. Even if you're just curious about what GK is - come on out! There will be free pizza along with tons of information on exciting Golden Key things to come, so get ready to meet new people and have some fun!

24.     STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Undergraduate Astrophysics Society (NEW POSTING):
Our Undergraduate Astrophysics Society assembles in the near future - and we are inviting your participation.  UAS is having its first meeting this semester on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:00pm. As always, we will gather in Room 7 of the Bryant Space Science Center (across from the HUB).

Our first meeting will be a concise blast:
 (1) An introduction of UAS
 (2) A slide-show of past activities
 (3) A short astronomy video
 (4) and a discussion of our future

25.     STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Undergraduate Philosophy Society:
Our first meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday, September 8 at 4:00pm in the philosophy library (on the third floor of Griffin-Floyd Hall). There will be a brief introduction to our club, followed by a lecture, and then a discussion of that lecture. Coffee and snacks will be served. Anyone is welcome.

"Rethinking Modality" : Professor Dr. Jubien will take issue with the prevailing wisdom regarding possibility, necessity, and essentialism, and will sketch a very different analysis of his own.

26.     STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity:
Are you pre-law and looking for ways to get involved on campus? Come find out how you can be a part of the university's leading pre-law organization! Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity International is having an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 8 at 7:00pm in CSE E-222. Come meet current members and find out how to apply. 27.     STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Engineers Without Borders:
We will have our first Engineers without Borders meeting of the semester on Tuesday, September 8 at 7:30pm in Frazier-Rogers, room 122. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about what EWB is all about. We will be giving more information about our international projects, research projects, local projects, and lots of other opportunities for you to get involved! All majors are welcome. Meet fun people, learn about how you can help your local and global communities, and eat tasty baked goods!

28.     STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Phi Sigma Pi:
Based on the foundation of Leadership, Scholarship, and Fellowship, Phi Sigma Pi is a national co-ed honor fraternity that is looking for new members in its UF chapter. Join us on at 7:00pm on Tuesday, September 8 in BAR 211 or at 7:00pm on Wednesday, September 9 in CSE E222 to learn more while enjoying free pizza. 29.     EVENT: Shabbat at Hillel--Learners service (TODAY):
Hillel will be celebrating Shabbat with its three regular service options (Orthodox, Conservative and Reform) and an alternative learners service for those who want to learn more about Shabbat, the meaning of the prayers and how the service works. Free Kosher dinner will be served afterward. If you're walking to Hillel, you can meet up with other students at 6:30pm at Gator Corner dining hall or the Rawlings bus stop. Shabbat continues on Saturday morning with services at 10:30am. Hillel is located at 2020 W. University Ave, across from the O'Connell Center. 30.     EVENT: Community Potluck:
Slow Food Gainesville is hosting Time For Lunch, a community potluck, this Labor Day, September 7, in order to discuss and gain support for changes to the Child Nutrition Act that will keep our school lunches healthier. In addition to the good eats, we'll be hosting speakers discussing the steps already being taken here in Gainesville to provide nutritional food to children in our community, as well as some activities for kids to enjoy.

Join us with a dish of your choice, large or small, and share a friendly meal with people in your community while discussing the food and health issues that affect us and our children. The potluck will be held at the Alachua County Extension Office (2800 NE 39th Ave), with doors opening at 5:00pm, followed by dinner and activities until our speakers begin at 6:00pm.
