HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Florida Collegiate Honors Council Call for Presentation Proposals and Scholarship Opportunity - Deadline Extended:
The Florida Collegiate Honors Council Conference will take place in Gainesville on February 19-21. This event provides an opportunity for those involved in Florida honors programs to share scholarship, ideas, and friendship. We encourage students to submit proposals for workshops or presentations, and co-presentation is encouraged. Please submit 100-word description of your proposal to Melissa at [log in to unmask] by Friday, December 4 for consideration. If you would like to look at last year's program for ideas, please stop by the Honors Office in 118 Hume.

Additionally, the University Honors Program may nominate one student for the Dr. Richard Piper Scholarship. This $1000 award is eligible to seniors with a strong record of leadership and service at UF. Interested students must submit a 500 word essay addressing their educational and life goals, as well as a resume and one recommendation letter from a professor to Melissa in 118 Hume by Friday, December 4.

Program presenters and scholarship winners will be expected to register for and attend the entire conference. For more information about either of these opportunities, please contact Melissa at [log in to unmask]  

2.	EVENT: Honors on Thursday: Prestigious Scholarships (NEW POSTING):
Have you ever wondered how to win a Rhodes, Mitchell, Udall or Truman Scholarship? Join the UF Honors Ambassadors at 7:15pm on Thursday, December 3 as we collaborate with honors advisors, student scholars, and the CRC to show you how to best orient your college career to win one of these prestigious scholarships. The event will be held in the Reitz Union, Room 282. All students are welcome to attend!

STUDENT HONORS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

3.	LEADERSHIP: SHO Executive Board Application - Academic Committee (NEW POSTING):
The Student Honors Organization Executive Board is looking for a new member! If you would like to be a member of the Academic Committee on the Executive Board, then please submit an application by 11:59pm on Friday, December 4. 4.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Peace Corps Health GlobeTalk (NEW POSTING):
Interested in working in health abroad? Come out to the Hub (International Center) on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30pm to hear returned Peace Corps Volunteers speak about their experiences working with individuals and communities to help improve basic healthcare at the grassroots level, where their impact can be the most significant and where health needs are most pressing. A recruiter will be present to answer any and all questions pertaining to the Peace Corps application process. E-mail [log in to unmask] for questions.

5.	JOB OPPORTUNITY: OPS Research Assistant Position Available (NEW POSTING):
The Radiation Oncology department in the College of Medicine is seeking a part-time student assistant for its research office who will be available to work 20 hours a week during business hours. This assistant will both help the editor prepare manuscripts for publication (by proofreading and editing, formatting per journal specifications, and scanning and manipulating images) and provide data management support. Eligible employees will be English, journalism, or communications majors. Necessary technical skills include proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and a willingness to learn new technologies. Interest and/or experience in the sciences (specifically biology or medicine) is a plus.

Eligible employees should be available to begin training in December.

6.	VOLUNTEER: Volunteer Orientation at the Florida Museum of Natural History (NEW POSTING):
Become a docent for the spring or summer exhibits, "Quilting Natural Florida" or "CSI: Crime Scene Insects"

Other positions available are research and collections assistants and Butterfly Rainforest interpreters and horticulturalists.

7.	LEADERSHIP: Officer Applications for Human Rights Awareness on Campus (NEW POSTING):
Human Rights Awareness on Campus is recruiting a treasurer for the spring semester. If you are passionate about human rights issues, want to make a difference, and are interested in the position, e-mail [log in to unmask] by December 3 to request an application.

8.	LEADERSHIP: CEI Ambassadors Accepting Applications (NEW POSTING):
The UF Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is now recruiting for new student ambassadors!

Who are we? The CEI Ambassadors are the student face of entrepreneurship at the University of Florida, with the mission to promote entrepreneurial thinking and involvement throughout the university and community. Members include successful entrepreneurs, prominent student leaders and some of the university's top students.

Who are we looking for? Big thinkers, innovators, visionaries, and the ultra ambitious with a fundamental desire to be brilliant. All majors, years, and interests are encouraged to apply.

9.	LEADERSHIP: Pride Awareness Month 2010 (NEW POSTING):
Pride Awareness Month, or "PAM" is an annual month-long series of events held in April that highlight the culture and lives of the LGBTQIAP community at the University of Florida. PAM is entering its tenth anniversary at UF and is currently seeking individual Event Directors and Overall Directors to staff this special event. 11.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Free HIV Testing (NEW POSTING, TODAY):
In honor of World AIDS Day 2009, Eta Sigma Gamma, GatorWell, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars teamed up to offer free HIV testing to UF students. The tests are free, by appointment only, and will take place December 1, from 5:30-9:30pm in the Florida Gym. Call 392-1161 x4281 today to schedule your free HIV test. 12.	ANNOUNCEMENT: GatorLAN 09 (NEW POSTING):
Attention Gamers! Gator Gaming is currently planning its debut event: GatorLAN Fall 09! This LAN party will serve as a fundraiser for its parent club, Phi Beta Lambda, and will take place on December 9 in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. Preregistration begins Monday, November 22 and will continue until Friday, December 4. Preregistration is $10; registration after December 4 is $15 and will be $15 at the door if space is still available.

13.	STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Golden Key (NEW POSTING):
The UF Golden Key chapter will be holding its last meeting this Wednesday, December 2 from 6:45-8:00pm in MAE-A 303. We will be holding executive board elections, discussing applications for local chapter scholarships, and explaining the interview process so that you can become a Golden Key director for Spring 2010. There are plenty of ways to get involved in this chapter of the world's most prestigious honor society, and we'll explain how you can during this meeting!

14.	STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: American Solar Energy Society/Society for Green Mobility (NEW POSTING):
The UF chapters of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) and the Society for Green Mobility (SGM) will be having a joint meeting on Thursday, December 3 at 7:00pm in Rinker 230. It is a general body meeting for old and new members, freshmen to grad students. If you think you might be interested in solar energy or going green, come check us out.

We will be discussing the 2010 Gainesville Solar Tour, and there will be free pizza!

15.	EVENT: RUB Entertainment Presents: John Vanderslice with Michael Claytor and His Friends (NEW POSTING):
Come rock out with RUB Entertainment as it presents John Vanderslice with special guests, Michael Claytor and His Friends on Wednesday, December 2 at 8:00pm for free in the Rion Ballroom. 

Indie rocker Vanderslice, who is originally from Gainesville, has toured with acts like Sufjan Stevens and The Mountain Goats. He released his seventh studio album in May. 

Opening for Vanderslice is Michael Claytor and His Friends, a local Gainesville band who performs a blend and of bluegrass and folk music.

16.	EVENT: Hillel Hanukkah Extravaganza (NEW POSTING):
Join Hillel in celebration of Hanukkah! The Hanukkah Extravaganza is happening Thursday, December 3 at 7:00pm at Hillel.

Show off your improv and rap skills, play some dreidel, get crafty by making your very own Menorah or delve into some dough - literally. We're making sufganiyot (jelly donuts)! There'll be music, food, fun and plenty of gelt (chocolate coins).
