HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS


1.      ANNOUNCEMENT: Director of the Honors Program interviews
Candidates for the Director of the Honors Program will be on campus this week for interviews.  Each candidate will present on their vision for the Honors Program in an open forum for faculty, staff and students.

Candidate Dr. Kevin Knudson will present on Friday, January 30 at 9:15am in 201A Criser Hall.

HONORS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

2.      ANNOUNCEMENT: New Honors Ambassadors
Honors Ambassadors would like to congratulate and welcome their new members: Jose Garcia, Kaitlin Cunningham, Ashley Richardson, Victoria Cacicedo, Courtney Sargent, Ross McClellan, Allison Kuipers, Cory Edgar, Sierra Seamen, Chad Zhang, Tori Tomiczek, Amy Rubin, Micah Lewis, Alyssa Prats, Meghan McMullen, Michael Eichner, Erin Murphy, and Peter Posada.

3.      ANNOUNCEMENT: Bands Needed for SHOstock:
The Student Honors Organization is hosting a concert named "SHOstock" on March 1 and needs your band to be featured! You will play to a large audience in front of soon to be adoring fans. Any genre of music is acceptable, and everyone is encouraged to apply!

4.      VOLUNTEER: SHO Air Potato Round-Up (NEW POSTING):
Free t-shirt! Entertainment! Great Prizes! Free food! Community Service! ... and did we mention free t-shirt?!

Air potatoes are an invasive threat to Florida's ecology, so SHO Community Service Committee is joining with the City of Gainesville Nature Operations Division to round 'em up and take 'em out.

Meet at 8:30am in Hume Commons (breakfast provided) on Saturday, January 31. Warm clothes and sneakers recommended.

5.      EVENT: SHO Presents Revenge of Capture the Flag (TODAY)
What: Giant Game of Capture the Flag
Where: Flavet Field (directly across the street from Hume)
When: Thursday, January 29 from 8:30-9:00pm
(This event is in replacement of Glow in the Dark Dodgeball- moved to February!)




ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

6.      SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: Outstanding Leadership Award for Graduating Seniors (NEW POSTING):
Nominations now are being accepted for the Spring 2009 Outstanding Leadership Award for Male and Female Graduating Seniors, sponsored by the University of Florida Alumni Association. The students selected for these awards will be acknowledged at the graduation ceremonies on April 30 through May 3. Applications may be downloaded from the Dean of Students website at

The application must be completed and submitted by the student. Letters of recommendation by faculty and staff are encouraged.

Deadline for all Applications: February 16.

7.      LEADERSHIP: Applications for 2009-2010 Student Conduct Committee (NEW POSTING):
Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution is now accepting student applications for the 2009-2010 Student Conduct Committee. Application forms are available in the Dean of Students Office, 202 Peabody Hall or online at www.dso.ufl.edu/

Interested applicants will need to schedule a 30-minute interview upon returning a completed application to our office (202 Peabody Hall).  Interviews will take place between February 16 and February 24.

All applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for membership:
1.      Must be a student in good standing with the University of Florida.
2.      Must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
3.      Must not currently be on conduct probation or suspension.
4.      Must attend all scheduled training sessions.

The deadline to apply is 4:30pm on Monday, February 9.




EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

8.      ANNOUNCEMENT: Supply Drive for Arbor House (NEW POSTING):
The Women's Leadership Council is currently holding a drive for Arbor House, a local home for single and expectant mothers. Needed items include: household paper products (trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, tissues), cleaning supplies (disinfectant spray, dish soap, Windex, laundry soap, etc.), infant wipes and diapers (all sizes), infant OTC Tylenol, diaper cream, and gift cards (Albertsons, Publix, Walmart, Target).

Please drop off items to the Center for Leadership and Service in Peabody Hall by Friday, February 6. Help us support local Gainesville women!

9.      ANNOUNCEMENT: Earth Day 2009 Planning (NEW POSTING):
Gators For A Sustainable Campus is planning an Earth Day 2009 celebration and would love to have a diverse group of organizations come table at the event or even get involved with the planning process. We are hoping to have such activities as a clothing exchange, face painting and a dunk booth, all geared towards somewhat of a carnival theme. 10.     ANNOUNCEMENT: Go on a TRiP!

11.     ANNOUNCEMENT: Catholic Awareness Week
This week is Catholic Awareness Week. The Catholic Student Center will be hosting a week full of events, some of which include a dance, a play, and a Superbowl party. Full details can be found at www.catholicgators.com

12.     ANNOUNCEMENT: VISA Talent Show is Calling Performers!
We are looking for talented performers to showcase cultural traditions at the upcoming VISA Talent Show. The event is an integral part of the international month and will be held at the O'Connell center on Saturday, April 18. The application deadline has been extended to Friday, January 30. 13.     ANNOUNCEMENT: Powershift 2009 in Washington DC
Want to meet Al Gore and Vandana Shiva? What about Nancy Pelosi?  Come to Powershift! From February 27 to March 2, thousands of young leaders will converge on Capitol Hill for Power Shift 2009, the second national youth summit to solve the climate crisis. A group of 55 students will be chosen from UF to attend. The cost is estimated to be $130 total for travel and lodging, if you contact [log in to unmask] before February 1.

14.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Student Investment Club (NEW POSTING, TODAY):
The Student Investment Club is meeting today, January 29 at 7:00pm in MCCA G 186. The agenda includes: Exciting Market Update, Discussion on Efficient Markets, Life insurance as an investment, Kickoff of Investment Challenge, and of course free pizza and soda! We also have an exciting event planned for next week, but you'll have to wait until the meeting to hear about that.

15.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Pre-Legal Honor Society (NEW POSTING):
Interested in law school? Pre-Legal Honor Society will be holding its next meeting on Monday, February 2 in TUR L005 at 7:00pm. Jennifer Zedalis, Legal Skills Professor of UF's Levin College of Law will be speaking, and there will be free pizza after the meeting. 16.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: AED Pre-Health Honor Society Accepting Applications:
Are you a pre-health student? Pre-med? Pre-dent? Pre-pharm? Pre-vet? Alpha Epsilon Delta, UF's most active and respected pre-health honor society, is now recruiting. Opportunities include leadership, service, shadowing, and help in becoming a more qualified pre-professional student.

Qualifications:
1. Completed two semesters of college with at least one at UF (summer counts as a semester) 2. A cumulative and science GPA of at least 3.2 3. Completed and turned-in application by Friday, January 30 at 5:00pm in Reitz 330C 4. Successfully complete an interview

17.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Upstart Films Meeting: (TODAY)
Upstart Films will hold its first meeting of the new semester this Thursday, January 29, in Turlington Rm. 2333 at 6:15pm. Upstart Films is the club for people who love to make movies, and all experience levels are welcomed. During this meeting, we will be screening past Upstart short films. Also, we will bring food for all of our current and new members!

18.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Programming Contest
The ACM Programming Team will be hosting a contest this Sunday, February 1 in CSE 113 starting at noon. It's open to all students, so come to solve puzzles, eat pizza, and compete for prizes! 19.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Aerial Club Meeting: (TODAY)
Come out to our second meeting of the aerial club, Thursday, January 29 at the Nadine Dance Pavilion (Room G10)  where you can learn choreography, dance, theatre, production, and tech for performances! We will learn technique in all the above areas listed with a focus on aerial silk, trapeze, and lyra! Bring a friend and become a member even sooner! No experience needed.

If you have ever seen Cirque Du Soleil or even a circus, this club teaches you how to use the "curtains" that people hung, danced, and contorted themselves in! Need: long sleeve shirt (not sweater), dance/exercise pants (no jeans please); pants you are comfortable to move in!  Reminder: no jewelry-we don't want to rip the fabric! 21.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Animal Activists of Alachua Meeting (TODAY)
Join us at our meeting Thursday, January 29 at 7:30pm in Reitz Union 355 for a meeting with Kari Bagnall, founder of Jungle Friends, and Elaine West, founder of Rooterville. We'll have a panel discussion on how to start and run your own animal sanctuary. Our awesome organic cotton t-shirts will be for sale as well!

Also, as dissections begin this week, AAA wants you to know that the UF Student Choice Policy gives you the right to a humane alternative to dissection if you feel any level of discomfort at the thought of dissecting, without any consequence to your grade. 22.     EVENT: CaribSA Fashion and Talent Showcase (NEW POSTING):
The Caribbean Student Association presents the Fashion Talent Showcase 2009 "Carnival: The Experience". This culturally exciting show will take place on January 30 in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom. Doors open at 7:00pm. We will also be collecting donations for Kids Against Hunger. Come out and enjoy a night full of music, color, and talent!

23.     EVENT: Free Improv Show (NEW POSTING):
Theatre Strike Force will be performing a free improv comedy show at the Orange and Brew this Friday, January 30 at 10:00pm. Come see this legendary UF troupe as they try their best to make you wet yourself.

24.     EVENT: AIM for Africa Charity Show (NEW POSTING):
The Arts in Medicine Committee of UF Premed AMSA is putting on a charity show to benefit the Shands AIM for Africa: Rwanda Project. All the proceeds go towards providing the population of Rugerero, Gisenyi, Rwanda with health insurance for the next five years! Admission is only $5, more than enough money to provide one Rwandan with health insurance for a whole year. Acts include The Sedoctaves, Sweet City Action, and Los Hijos de Ismael. The show is this Saturday, January 31, at 7:00pm in the Shands MSB Auditorium.

25.     EVENT: UF College of Medicine Project Haiti Mixer (NEW POSTING):
Enjoy some refreshments with students from the UF College of Medicine. Highlights include our speaker Dr. Gessner who is the Director of Admissions for COM, a medical student panel, and tours. There will be a raffle for a free Kaplan MCAT course. This event is taking place on Saturday, January 31 from 9:00am-12:00pm in room C1-17 of the College of Medicine.

Tickets are $15 at the door and only $12 if you RSVP to [log in to unmask] (Please make the check out to "Project Haiti"). All proceeds go toward UFCOM Medical Relief Trip - Project Haiti.
