HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.      RESEARCH: Present at the 10th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium (NEW POSTING):
Undergraduates who have been conducting research are invited to present the results of their research at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium to be held on Saturday, February 28, from 9:00am to 4:00pm in Keene-Flint Hall.

Any student wishing to present their research at the symposium is invited to submit their abstract to be considered for inclusion at http://www.honors.ufl.edu/webapps/usp/ . Students who have participated in research programs such as University Scholars, McNair Scholars, HHMI Science for Life, as well as students who are working on an honors thesis or other independent research with a professor are especially invited to apply.

Students have the option of presenting a poster or conducting a 15-minute oral presentation. For more details about the symposium, see http://www.scholars.ufl.edu/symposium.html . This is a great opportunity for students to gain research presentation experience.

The deadline to submit your abstract for consideration is February 9.




HONORS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

2.      EVENT: SHO: A Very Merry UNbirthday Party:
Is your birthday NOT on February 3? Do you like delicious treats and friends? Birthdays only come once a year, but there are 364 UNbirthdays left to fill with merriment (a.k.a. cake, cookies, games, etc.)--come celebrate this one with SHO!

A Very Merry UNbirthday Party is taking place on Tuesday, February 3 at 8:30pm in Hume Commons.

...and you're welcome to join even if it IS your birthday!




ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

3.      SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: University Women's Club Scholarships:
The University Women's Club awards scholarships each spring to undergraduate juniors and seniors. These awards are named in honor of the wives of past University of Florida Presidents and distinguished administrators. The requirements for consideration include full time enrollment at the University of Florida, current junior or senior status, a minimum of a 3.6 GPA, and participation in campus and/or community activities. In addition, there are two awards specifically designated for undergraduate or graduate students with a disability that are presented from the Rita O'Connell Scholarship Foundation.

All of the monetary awards recognize scholarship, leadership, and service to the university and/or community. This year each award will be $1,000.

Applications may be downloaded from the Dean of Students website at www.dso.ufl.edu/scholarships/uwc

The following items must be submitted in one packet by 4:30pm on February 24 to the Dean of Students Office in 202 Peabody Hall:

* Five copies of the completed scholarship application, answering all questions on pages 1 and 2.

* Two letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes, including one from a community service agency with which the student has worked.

* One original plus four copies of the student's official transcript from the University of Florida.

Incomplete application packets will not be considered.

4.      SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: Outstanding Leadership Award for Graduating Seniors:
Nominations now are being accepted for the Spring 2009 Outstanding Leadership Award for Male and Female Graduating Seniors, sponsored by the University of Florida Alumni Association. The students selected for these awards will be acknowledged at the graduation ceremonies on April 30 through May 3. Applications may be downloaded from the Dean of Students website at

The application must be completed and submitted by the student. Letters of recommendation by faculty and staff are encouraged.

Deadline for all Applications: February 16.

5.      STUDY ABROAD: Summer Field School in Italy:
I would like to inform you about our summer 2009 field school in Italy, the San Gemini Preservation Studies Program, now in its 11th year, which is dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage.

This year the program is sponsored by the Department of Art History and Studio Arts at John Cabot University (www.johncabot.edu), an American liberal arts university in Rome, in collaboration with the Historic Preservation Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and other preservation organizations.

Courses offered (3 credits each): Introduction to Art Restoration in Italy. Surveying and Analyzing Historic Buildings. Traditional Painting Methods and Restoration Techniques. Preservation Theory and Practice in Italy

Field Projects: Surveying the 12th Century San Giovanni Battista Church complex. Surveying the Church of Santo Gemine. Archaeological survey of the public baths in Carsulae

Our program offers both undergraduate and graduate credits and is open to students from many disciplines. The program is taught in English. Application deadline is March 15.

6.      RESEARCH: Southeastern Ecology and Evolution Conference Needs Abstracts (NEW POSTING):
Abstracts for papers and posters are now being accepted for the Southeastern Ecology and Evolution Conference (SEEC), to be held March 27-29 at the Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites in Gainesville. Graduate students, undergraduate students, and postdoctoral researchers are invited to submit an abstract for SEEC. Abstracts related to ecology and evolution are welcomed. Examples of topics from previous conferences are: behavior, biodiversity, conservation, functional morphology, population ecology, and systematics.

Along with your abstract please submit the following:

Name
Institutional affiliation
Status (undergraduate, graduate, or postdoc)
Whether the abstract is for a paper or poster presentation
If you would like to volunteer to moderate paper presentations

The deadline for submitting abstracts is Tuesday, February 10.

7.      INTERNSHIP: Pre-Optometry Internship:
The VA Eye Clinic is currently accepting applications for the Pre-Optometry Internship. Interns will be required to make an 8-hour weekly commitment to the program. Interns will have the opportunity to administer ancillary testing such as Humphrey Visual Fields, ocular photography, pachymetry, GDx and RNFL scans on patients visiting the clinic. There are also many opportunities to eventually begin independent research study, observe optometrists, residents and externs during patient visits and pursue leadership positions within the program. The internship program is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Anna Wong, OD.

8.      VOLUNTEER: Volunteer Orientation and Training at the Florida Museum of Natural History:
You're invited to attend training and orientation to volunteer during the spring semester at the Florida Museum.

February 6, 8:30am to 1:00pm: Training for all docents. Learn about the ecology and environment of South Florida's Everglades and invasive species that could destroy it. Required training for spring semester exhibit docents.

March 05, 10:15am to 12:30pm: Orientation for all new volunteers. Many opportunities available in research and collections and exhibits and public programs.

9.      LEADERSHIP: Gator Institute of Leadership Development (NEW POSTING):
Lead101, a student organization sponsored by the Center for Leadership and Service, is hosting its 6th annual G.I.L.D. (Gator Institute of Leadership Development) conference on Sunday, February 22. G.I.L.D. is a one-day retreat skillfully designed to offer new and refreshing perspectives on leadership. G.I.L.D. will challenge each individual leader to move away from conventional views of leadership and become engaged in self-enrichment and leadership development. Due to the content of the conference, applicants should have some previous leadership experience, however it does not necessarily need to be through the University of Florida or through methods typically associated with leadership.

10.     LEADERSHIP: Women's Leadership Conference:
The Women's Leadership Council will host the 22nd Annual Women's Leadership Conference-"Women in the Spotlight: What Role Will You Play?"-- on Sunday February 8.  The conference provides an array of workshops, a career panel and keynote speaker Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan. Register at www.dso.ufl.edu/studentorgs/wlc/conference.php by February 2. This conference is free for honors students. You must pay upfront, but will be refunded when you arrive the day of the conference.

11.     LEADERSHIP: Applications for 2009-2010 Student Conduct Committee:
Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution is now accepting student applications for the 2009-2010 Student Conduct Committee. Application forms are available in the Dean of Students Office, 202 Peabody Hall or online at www.dso.ufl.edu/

Interested applicants will need to schedule a 30-minute interview upon returning a completed application to our office (202 Peabody Hall).  Interviews will take place between February 16 and February 24.

All applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for membership:
1.      Must be a student in good standing with the University of Florida.
2.      Must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average.
3.      Must not currently be on conduct probation or suspension.
4.      Must attend all scheduled training sessions.

The deadline to apply is 4:30pm on Monday, February 9.




EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

12.     ANNOUNCEMENT: Supply Drive for Arbor House:
The Women's Leadership Council is currently holding a drive for Arbor House, a local home for single and expectant mothers. Needed items include: household paper products (trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, tissues), cleaning supplies (disinfectant spray, dish soap, Windex, laundry soap, etc.), infant wipes and diapers (all sizes), infant OTC Tylenol, diaper cream, and gift cards (Albertsons, Publix, Walmart, Target).

Please drop off items to the Center for Leadership and Service in Peabody Hall by Friday, February 6. Help us support local Gainesville women!

13.     ANNOUNCEMENT: Earth Day 2009 Planning:
Gators For A Sustainable Campus is planning an Earth Day 2009 celebration and would love to have a diverse group of organizations come table at the event or even get involved with the planning process. We are hoping to have such activities as a clothing exchange, face painting and a dunk booth, all geared towards somewhat of a carnival theme. 14.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Neuroscience Club (NEW POSTING):
The second Neuroscience Club meeting of the semester is taking place on Tuesday, February 3. It's held at the same time and same place as last semester: 7:20pm in room NPB1002 of the New Physics Building. There will be snacks! And don't forget to buy and pick up your awesome shirts!

We will be discussing all the exciting things that we have planned for this semester, including the research fair. Also, Dr. Edward Valenstein will be coming to speak about ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease): A Clinician's View of the Science.

15.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Esperanto Club (NEW POSTING):
What if everyone could speak a common language?

At the Esperanto Club's first event of the spring semester, we will introduce Esperanto, a language created for international communication. If you've ever wanted to learn about many cultures, travel inexpensively, and make friends around the world, come and find out why two million people in over 120 countries already speak Esperanto.

16.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: International Business Society Study Abroad Panel (NEW POSTING):
International Business Society is hosting a Study Abroad Panel on Wednesday, February 4, at 6:30pm in MAT018. For all majors interested in studying abroad, here is the perfect opportunity for you gain a student's perspective on living with a host-family, getting over the language barrier, how students funded their trip, etc.

17.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Sociology Club:
Come to the next Sociology Club meeting on Tuesday, February 3 at 6:00pm in TUR 2306.
A guest speaker will be talking about careers in retail.  Anyone is welcome, and free food will be served!

18.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Engineers Without Borders:
We'll be having an EWB general body meeting on Tuesday, February 3 at 7:30pm in ROG 122!

If you're interested in being on the exec board, this is a good meeting to come to; all of the exec board will be describing their positions and how much fun it is!  If you're not interested in being on the exec board, it's still a good meeting to come to because there will be the usual good times and updates on our international projects, local projects, research projects, and other fun ways to get involved with EWB at UF.

Come to find out more about how to get involved and save the planet in the process.

19.     STUDENT ORG ANNOUNCEMENT: Pre-Legal Honor Society (TODAY):
Interested in law school? Pre-Legal Honor Society will be holding its next meeting on Monday, February 2 in TUR L005 at 7:00pm. Jennifer Zedalis, Legal Skills Professor of UF's Levin College of Law will be speaking, and there will be free pizza after the meeting. 20.     EVENT: Islam in Focus: Muslims in Post 9/11 America (NEW POSTING, TODAY):
Join Islam On Campus for the first in a series of speaking events during Islam Awareness Month!

The attacks on September 11, 2001 drastically changed the political landscape in the United States, which has had a profound impact on Muslim Americans in the public sphere. Join us for an evening with international human rights lawyer and media personality Arsalan Iftikhar as we analyze how these changes have not only affected the rights of Muslims but of every American citizen.

This event is taking place on Monday, February 2 from 7:00-8:30pm in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom.
