The 15th annual Public Interest Environmental Conference will be held at UF Levin College of Law February 26-28, 2009. A brochure and registration info is attached and can be found at www.law.ufl.edu/piec UF students, staff and faculty are free but must register.
The theme for the conference is "Beyond Doom and Gloom: Illuminating a Sustainable Future for Florida."
Victoria Tschinkel, Former DEP Secretary, and current Chair of 1000 Friends of Florida, will kick off the conference at the Opening Reception on Thursday evening. Rena Steinzor, President of the Center for Progressive Reform and Professor at the University of Maryland Law School will give the keynote address at Friday's banquet entitled:
"Reviving Government Protection of Health, Safety and the Environment: "Yes, We Can," But "Will We?"
In between, the conference includes plenary speakers and panels on alternative energy supplies, social marketing and communications, water supply, environmental journalism, adaptation to sea level rise, cap and trade programs, and greening ports, as well as workshops on the land use approval process and communicating with legislators. A wrap up plenary will gaze 50 years into Florida's future from the lens' of history, urban & regional planning, ecology and advocacy.
