Are YOU ready to break your addiction to petroleum-based motor fuels? If so,
read on.

 

I will be displaying a dedicated natural gas powered Honda Civic GX at the
UF Law School Public Interest Environmental and Land Use Law Conference
Friday and Saturday morning. The vehicle is owned by TECO / Peoples Gas and
is on short-term loan.

 

This car runs on CNG (aka compressed natural gas or methane - CH4); this
vehicle is the cleanest, greenest mass produced vehicle available in the
world today; it is even cleaner than gasoline hybrids.

 

It uses proven, reliable technology; a piston engine and transmission. It is
powered by natural gas, a domestically produced fossil fuel that is readily
available, at an affordable cost, throughout the USA; supplies are abundant
for at least 50 years. If you have natural gas service, you can even fill
this car up at your home with an applicance called Phill at the standard
GRUs rate for natural gas; approximately $1.30/gge.

 

I advocate natural gas fuels for two reasons:

1. Substitution of natural gas for gasoline reduces life-cycle greenhouse
gas emissions by 30% according to analysis performed for the Californai Air
Resources Board.

2. Natural gas motor fuels can be blended with hydrogen at an affordable
cost; this simple act creates a pathway that will accelerate the widespread
use of renewable hydrogen as a motor fuel.

 

I am showing this car to demonstrate the concept that the widespread use of
gaseous motor fuels, aka natural gas, is the most cost-effective way of
breaking our total dependence, some would say addiction, to liquid
petroleum-based fuels.

 

Natural gas vehicles give YOU the choice to buy non-petroleum fuels - at an
affordable cost. The vehicles are competitive with gasoline vehicles and
hybrids; over the past 20 years natural gas fuels have consistently been 20%
to 50% cheaper than gasoline and / or diesel fuel.

 

You have NOT had the opportunity to choose to use this cleaner, safer,
domestically produced motor fuel.

 

No more; it is time to give consumers the opportunity to choose where to
invest your motor fuel money; invest in jobs at home; or somewhere else.

 

Refueling NGVs is NOT a barrier; it is a business opportunity. Natural gas
distribution pipelines are in place; the compressors and other equipment
needed to create a network of fueling stations for natural gas vehicles are
readily available and affordable. Equipment is modular; it can be installed
in a matter of months; not years or decades.

 

No technology breakthroughs are needed; only awareness followed by education
and an attitude adjustment.

 

We do not need to wait for your elected representatives to act; just as we
have empowered investment in solar energy, we can vote to solve the oil
crisis with our pocketbooks.

 

I am driving this NGV around Gainesville today and through the weekend. In
addition to showing it at the UF Law School I will drive it to the United
Church of Gainesville for the 0930 Sunday service.

 

I have to return it to Ocala on Monday; TECO / Peoples Gas will be showing
this car throughout North Florida over the next several weeks. If you would
