For the latest news on the use of bio-methane (aka natural gas) as a motor
fuel, you can subscribe to this free e-newsletter. Simply go to
www.ngvglobal.com <http://www.ngvglobal.com/> and sign up. Unfortunately
for America's energy security, clean air, etc. most of the NGV action is in
other parts of the world.

The good news is that the technology needed to use methane in motor vehicles
is mature. Fueling equipment could be readily available and compressed and
liquefied methane supplied at affordable prices IF federal and state energy,
automotive and motor fuel policy were simply based on objective
performance-based goals and standards, such as maximizing reduction of
life-cycle emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

The dedicated natural gas powered Honda Civic GX is the greenest car
available today from an OEM.

Merc B Class CNG NGT 170
<http://www.ngvglobal.com/images/stories/vehicles/Merc_B_Class150.jpg> USA,
Washington DC

While most US vehicle manufacturers currently remain non-committal about the
return of OEM natural gas vehicles in the United States, Daimler could be
displaying some interest, exhibiting their bi-fuel B 170 NGT at this week's
Washington <http://www.washingtonautoshow.com/> Auto Show. Mercedes Benz
USA's official PR response to enquiries is that they have no plans to launch
the B-Class at all in the USA (NGT, diesel or gasoline) and that "the
B-Class NGT is currently on display to showcase our commitment to advanced
powertrain technology for a variety of different vehicle applications." Some
press sources in the US however are quoting Mercedes personnel as saying the
company is in fact testing the market. Either way, the choice of Washington
DC as the first port of call for the 'advanced powertrain' vehicle is
expected to give policy makers food for thought on the matter of US energy
policy. See next week's Fleets <http://www.fleetsandfuels.com/> and Fuels
for more info.

India, Kandla

Increasing demand for compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders is being met
with increased supply from India, following the establishment of the
country's largest CNG cylinder plant, in the Kandla Special Economic Zone.
Newly formed Associate High Pressure Technologies Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of
Mumbai based Associate Group, has spent $US 40 million establishing a Type 1
steel CNG cylinder plant with a capacity to produce 480,000 units annually.

Oslo City Council in Norway is lowering its carbon emissions, putting
previously flared methane produced at sewage plants to use powering the
city's public buses. The Guardian
<http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2009/jan/27/biomethane-energy>
reports the program is in step with the city's plans to become carbon
neutral by 2050 and counters increases in carbon emissions of 10% since
2000. Infrastructure is expected to be operational by September 2009 to
allow the biomethane to be used to fuel 80 of the city's public buses but
ultimately 400 public buses could be running on it in due course.Fuel costs
savings of around 60% are expected.

Commence February

Source - The Nation

Tuesday, 03 February 2009 00:00

Thailand, Bangkok

Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) managing director Pinetr Puapatanakul
is reported as saying yesterday that bidding for the supply of natural gas
powered buses will be opened this month. He said amended Terms of Reference
allow the import of 2,000 buses and 2,000 from local manufacturers. The
winning bidder will have to deliver 4,000 buses within 18 months or in two
instalments of 2,000 each. BMTA also proposes an additional 2,000 natural
gas buses be leased. "After procuring the first batch of 4,000 NGV buses,
the BMTA will propose leasing another 2,000 NGV buses because we want to
service people on all routes. Moreover, we will open the chance for private
bus operators to join the project," he added. (Source

Construction on the Medgaz consortium's sub-Mediterranean natural gas
pipeline connecting Algeria to Spain has been completed with the laying the
last 24-inch pipes along the 210 km route, which runs from Beni Saf,

Fleet Efficiency

USA, Bentonville

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has announced it will test two different alternatively
fueled heavy duty trucks and two new types of heavy-duty commercial hybrid
trucks as a part of the company's efforts to build on its progress in
developing a more sustainable trucking fleet. Their choice includes four
Peterbilt Model 386 trucks and one yard truck, which operates only on the
distribution center property, to operate on liquid natural gas (LNG). These
trucks are part of a partnership with the Mojave Air Quality Management
District and will operate out of the distribution center in Southern
California.

Source - NGV Global

Monday, 02 February 2009 00:00

USA, Anaheim

As of December 2008, all 16 Disneyland Resort trams, which transport guests
between the two theme parks and parking facilities, have operated on
clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG). The switch to CNG from a hybrid
engine was made possible through a $1.17 million grant from the Carl Moyer
Memorial Air Quality Standards Attainment Program, which paid for nearly
half the conversion costs. Using CNG will eliminate the need for
approximately 50,000 gallons of diesel per year. For the 10 years prior to
the conversion, diesel/hybrid engines powered Disneyland trams. "We at
Disneyland Resort are proud of our commitment to exploring and implementing
new technologies for a cleaner environment and furthering the environmental
legacy left by Walt Disney," said Michael O'Grattan, senior vice president
of resort operations. (Press Release
