Lea Winerman, science editor for The OnlineNewsHour with Jim Lehrer, has published an article, "Crisis Communication," in the 1/22/09 issue of Nature. She describes how what used to be crisis "warning" - how to direct messages TO people about what they should do in an disaster - has now become "crisis communication" - where folks let each other know what's going near them. This change has come about because of social networking through cell phones and websites. And the change has resulted in more timely, accurate and extensive information, leading to reduced deaths, injury, and property damage.
