Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Some Initial Thoughts

Over the last several years, sales of Toyota's Prius Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) have steadily increased because of its very good fuel economy and also, because of its status as a "green" icon. Interest in the Prius ramped up during the summer of 2008 when the price of regular gasoline reached $4 a gallon nationwide. HEVs work by supplying auxiliary power to the drive train to optimize the performance of the vehicle's internal combustion engine. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) take this concept further by adding additional batteries to the design that allow the vehicle to operate in a nearly all-electric mode over short distances (<30 miles). Unlike HEVs, PHEV batteries can be charged by an external electrical power supply and electric utilities are beginning to anticipate an increase in power demand to fuel PHEVs.
To gain more insight into the performance characteristics of PHEVs, Progress Energy has built a demonstration fleet of twelve Prius (or Priuses or Prii...) converted into PHEVs with the Hymotion L5 Conversion Modules (http://www.a123systems.com/hymotion ). One of the converted vehicles belongs to the Program for Resource Efficient Communities at the University of Florida, which has been operating it for the last three months. This seminar will present an initial evaluation of the vehicle's performance and discuss some of the implications of their integration into built environments' grid.
Lithium ion batteries are a key source for mobile energy and one of the most promising solutions for environment-friendly transportation. Dr. Meng from UF will present the scientific argument for why LIB is the best choice for Plug-in HEVs. She will also demonstrate that the state-of-art electrode materials for lithium ion batteries fall short of the requirements in terms of cost, safety and cycle life and how such obstacles can be overcome by new materials development and cell architecture.
