Thanks to Randy Switt's idea we now have a reliable count for the url in question. He suggested malforming the link we are wanting to count then do a link validation scan on the production site. The link was only down for the 3 minutes required to do the link validation scan.
Thank you Mr. Switt!
BTW, we use Web Link Validator.

Subject: Searching for a repetitive URL
We would like to find every instance where we link to another site within our pages, in other words we know we have a link to another site in many places as the link is in an include file that is our footer but would like to see a reliable number of times this link appears throughout our site. Searching for the text associated with the url obviously doesn't do what we need as the text appears many times without the url included. Searching local files is of no help either as it only sees the include once.
In Google I typed "site:ourdomain.ufl.edu theotherdomain.org" This returned 334 results which sounds close. Are there other suggestions to definitively reveal the number of times a link to another domain embedded within our pages appears?
