Happy Friday BESTers,
There are many strategies for developing food waste-to-biogas
projects. This article discusses one possibility they're looking
at in the UK to sending food waste to the sewer via sink-mounted
disposals. At the treatment plant an anaerobic digester would
treat both the food waste and sewage, killing two birds with one
stone by producing biogas from both waste streams. This could be
a good strategy for capturing food waste generated throughout the
community where individual digesters may not be pratical. In the
US where most homes already have disposals, the switchover would
make even more sense. In fact some high volume sources
(restaurants, grocery stores) are already sending their food waste
to the sewer. Why not make biogas, rather than expend energy to
treat this waste?
