Diana, we do have the 5-paragraph theme in our developmental composition courses. It's just a formula to teach them the structure. Then, we hope in ENGL 1010, they can branch out and experiment like any good chef once the recipe becomes familiar.

Do they have to have 3 body paragraphs? I try to stay away from the 5
paragraph theme format.
Sorry, my composition hat is coming out on this one.

Subject: Re: Self Reflection Questions
Often, for our final essay in our developmental composition courses, we have
students write a self-evaluation essay. They are to focus on the idea of
"knowing what I know now, what will I do differently next semester?". We
have them focus their three body paragraphs on the following: academic
improvements, financial improvements, and personal improvements. We get
fascinating papers. They must look back at their behavior over the semester
and see where they were successful and why, and more importantly, where they
were not successful and why. Then, we have then print two copies: one for me
to grade; one for them to keep as a plan for next semester.
So far, it's been very effective.

Jennifer,
Three of the questions that I ask are:
What changes have you made this term that have helped you become a more
successful student? Why have they helped?
What changes do you still need to make?
What's stopping you?

I'm looking for 'end of semester self reflection questions' for students to
assess their own growth over time. Thanks for sharing!
