Thanks for forwarding the article about using pet wastes for fuel, unfortunately it is a myth. A awhile ago I looked into this company and to San Francisco's program to see if we could do something similar. I was disappointed when I finally found the Robert Reed that is quoted in the article and he told me that the article was wrong. Attached is an email he sent me a few months ago and below is his response from today (I checked in with him to make sure that there weren't any new developments).

Keep scouting for good ideas for us to apply here in Alachua County!!!!

Dear Stacie,

They reposted an article written three years ago. We emailed them and asked them to take it down.

Hello Robert. We briefly talked a couple months ago and you sent me an email stating that San Francisco is not composting or collecting pet wastes separately. I recently had some citizens send me this link below which quotes you and talks about how San Francisco is collecting pet wastes for fuel. Is this article incorrect?

San Francisco dog poop recycling program could power 1,000 area homes each year!
That's something to bark about!

Good morning BESTers,

Feedstocks for biogas are all around us. San Francisco is beginning a new program to produce energy from dog waste through anaerobic digestion. The feces will be mixed with food waste to balance the feedstock and produce more energy. Pet feces comprises 3.8% of San Francisco's landfilled waste and accounts for 10 million tons nationally. The process also eliminates pathogens in the waste, a problem that is gaining increasing attention with current methods. With innovative programs such as this, there is huge potential for biogas in our sustainable energy future.

Have a great weekend,
