Subject: Tuesday Seminar Announcement: Climate Change and Water Resources in South Africa

Please circulate:

*Seminar Announcement*

*Tuesday, May 26
1 PM to 2PM
Rogers 122
*

*A Framework for Including the Impacts of a Changing Climate on Water
Resources Management*

* Mark Summerton, Umgeni Water, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
*

For effective water resources management, all “stressors” that may
impact on balancing future water supply and demand must be assessed.
Hydrologists and Engineers have recently begun making headway towards
assessing a previously ignored “stressor”, viz. the impact of a changing
climate. At Umgeni Water, a bulk water utility in South Africa, a
framework has been initiated to quantify potential impacts of a changing
climate on water resources management.

The seminar firstly introduces the framework and how it has been
included in the water resources management process, and secondly shows
how it has been successfully applied on strategic catchments to model
possible future scenarios of climate change on water supply.

==================================================================
During the past twelve years Mark Summerton has been providing
scientific and technical services relating to water resources management
for a large water service provider in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
During this time he has developed a passion for being able to provide
holistic solutions to water management challenges using a combination of
assessment and monitoring, water resources planning, hydrological, water
quality, GIS and more recently, basic engineering techniques in a
decision support environment. He is registered with the South African
Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP), and a Committee
member of South African National Committee of IAHS (SANCIAHS).
