Hello BESTers,
I hope everyone is having a great weekend. Increasing pressure on
landfills in Europe have led the UK to consider banning sending
food waste to landfills, but not without its controversy. People
are concerned about who will foot the bill, and there are odor and
health concerns about collecting food waste at home. This latter
argument seems weak, though, as people have been collecting food
waste for compost for many years without any problems. The
arguments for the ban are that food waste takes up valuable space
in landfill, produces greenhouse gases in landfills, wastes
nutrients, and is a potential source for bioenergy. While
creating a ban on food waste to landfills may seem a bit extreme;
something must be done to end this unsustainable practice.
