Karen:
Your words beautifully expressed how so many of us felt about Kathy. She was my colleague, mentor, friend, cheerleader, and confidant. It was Kathy that "gently advised" me to get more involved with CRLA back when I was new to the field. Okay, it may not have been so gently. When Kathy wanted someone to get involved . . . one simply relented! I loved how she tapped into people's potential and helped make them shine.
As a Fellow of the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations, she truly embodied Martha Maxwell's vision of an educator that "represents the upper echelon of the practitioners, researchers, teachers and administrators in the Learning Assistance and Developmental Education fields." Kathy was ". . . a person to whom colleagues turned for ideas and advice in respect to teaching, program development, evaluation, research, or theory."
Kathy gave me more than advice. Through her wonderful smile, quick wit, raspy voice, and self-assured words, she gave me the courage to dream. I will miss her.
Sincerely,
Russ

Kathy Carpenter, a Fellow of the Council of Learning Assistance and
Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA, formerly ACDEA) since
2001, passed away last weekend of cancer. Kathy was the longtime
learning center director and tutoring program coordinator at the
University of Nebraska at Kearney. Mentor and friend to many in the
field, she continued her work even after retirement from UNK. Articles
to which she contributed appeared recently in CRLA and NADE publications.
When Kathy left Kearney a few years ago, she abandoned her permanent
land address as well. Living in her RV with an adorable dog she named
Scooter, Kathy traveled North America -- anywhere from Mt. Denali to
coastal Mexico -- most of the year, parking her rig at a friend's for
the summer and working her garden there. Every few weeks she emailed a
note to friends around the world. Like a true educator, she shared not
only her experiences but also the stories of historical figures, feats
of engineering, kindnesses of strangers, and marvels of nature of the
locales she traversed.
Kathy's friends in CRLA can't quite yet contemplate her absence. Just a
few weeks ago she led a 10-vehicle LoWs caravan from Deming, NM, with an
itinerary through the Midwest and Southwest. And now she is gone.
If you have a memory or Kathy you want to share, please share it with us
on the listserve and send it to Jo-Ann Mullen, former CRLA President and
JCRL editor, at [log in to unmask], who is writing a memorial to Kathy.
