Room 282 Reitz Union
Dr. Pritchard's presentation will include a screening of the BBC documentary, "Lonesome George and the Battle for Galapagos," in which he is featured, and will be followed by a discussion about global environmental challenges. Lonesome George is the last remaining Pinta Island Giant Tortoise. When he dies, his species will be extinct. He is an icon of his native Galapagos Islands and a symbol of the battle to preserve their unique wildlife which is under threat from illegal fishing, the demands of a booming population and an ever-expanding tourism industry.
Educated at Oxford University and the University of Florida, where he earned his Ph.D. in Zoology, Dr. Peter Pritchard is most commonly known for his campaign of almost 40 years for the conservation of turtles. He is recognized as one of the world's foremost turtle and tortoise experts and a Time magazine-designated "Hero of the Planet." Dr. Pritchard is best known for his work in the Galapagos and Guyana.
