UF INNOVATION THROUGH INSTITUTIONAL INTEGRATION (I3) program presents:

A leading ethics expert - DENI ELLIOTT, Ph.D.
Eleanor Poynter Jamison Chair in Media Ethics and Press Policy, and Graduate Program Director at the University of South Florida

Reitz Union - Room 282
12:00 - 1:30 PM

FROM HUMAN SUBJECTS TO RESEARCH PARTNERS: A NEW PARADIGM FOR RESEARCH ON PERSONS

Researchers who work with human subjects are well-versed in risk and benefit, the elements of informed consent, and recognition of vulnerable populations. They know how to jump through IRB hoops, protect their subjects, and get research done as well. This presentation invites audience members to participate in a thought experiment that questions the starting assumptions of human subject research, and suggests that human participation in research can, instead, be understood as collaboration.

Dr. Elliott holds the Eleanor Poynter Jamison Chair in Media Ethics and Press Policy at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. She serves on the USF system-wide Social and Behavioral Sciences IRB and is the Campus Ombuds for USFSP. Dr, Elliott is also Graduate Director in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. Before coming to University of South Florida, Dr. Elliott served as the founding director of the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth College and then as the founding director of the Practical Ethics Institute at the University of Montana. She has held tenured or joint teaching appointments in the departments of education, journalism, mass communication or philosophy at Utah State University, Dartmouth College, University of Montana and University of South Florida. Dr. Elliott holds degrees from the University of Maryland, Wayne State University, and Harvard University. She has written extensively across a variety of fields in practical ethics and has authored, co-authored, or edited seven books, three documentary films, more than 100 scholarly journal articles and book chapters, and has produced work for trade and lay audiences including a weekly 2-minute radio show for public radio stations, called Ethically Speaking. Her work in research ethics has received support from the US Dept. of Education, National Science Foundation, and Office of Research Integrity.
