Agenda
Talk by Kevin Ratkus, "Water based recreation in Alachua County". As of Sep 09 Alachua County Forever (ACF), and various partners, protect over
17,448 acres within the county border. Of this 90% is either open or is planned to be open to public access. This brief overview will introduce some of the work they are doing as well as some of the wetland areas that are being actively managed.
Upcoming events
Feb 13th- Alpine tower at Lake Walburg. We will be taking advantage of the "Challenge Course" and climbing wall at Lake Wauberg (http://www.recsports.ufl.edu/lake_ropes.aspx). Details to be given at the meeting but if you are interested in a day outdoors as well as a trip to the best burger bar in Alachua, you will need to get a $5 deposit (total cost $5) to Mike Jerauld ASAP.
Feb 27th- Cypress Seedlings- We will be potting up 1000 cypress seedlings to be grown and used as a fund raising sources for the club.
We will also be touring the Holly factory plant nursery and inspecting some of the work being carried out there on water quality monitoring and improvement methods (Researchers have recently installed a huge denitrification wall at the site)
March 20th - Tumblin Creek clean up and post clean up BBQ at Bivens Arm
April 3rd- Suwanee camping trip.
April 6th- Elections
Other events to be confirmed this semester
- Native planting of storm-water pond at the Coca Cola factory
- Compound and Mesocosm clean up for the Soil and Water Science Department
