The Pennsylvania State University is currently seeking applications and 
nominations for the position of Director of Penn State Learning. The 
Office of Undergraduate Education seeks a visionary, energetic colleague 
committed to student academic success to provide leadership at Penn 
State Learning. Penn State Learning engages professional staff, student 
peer tutors, faculty scholars-in-residence, the Penn State Learning 
Council, and the broad university community to support student learning 
across the curriculum, with particular emphasis in domains such as 
writing, language arts, mathematics, public scholarship, and the 
physical and biological sciences.

The new Director will enjoy the opportunity to shape the implementation 
of a new vision: "PSU Learning promotes inclusive communities of 
practice that encourage academic excellence. Our communities recognize 
that discoveries of what has come before lead to new ideas, new 
theories, and new approaches in the arts, sciences, and professions and 
that learning is sustained when students accept responsibility for 
themselves and for their role as active partners in communities of 
excellence."

The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Undergraduate 
Education. The primary duties and responsibilities for this position are 
to provide administrative and intellectual leadership for Penn State 
Learning at University Park that includes the implementation of the Penn 
State Learning vision; professional growth and development for staff and 
tutors; coordination of professional student and learning communities 
that contribute to student success; identification and facilitation of 
regular and special projects, assessments, and learning experiments; and 
representation of Penn State Learning to others at Penn State and, as 
appropriate, beyond the University. Supervise staff, faculty, and 
student employees; interview, hire, train, and evaluate employees. 
Consult with and coordinate related efforts at other Penn State 
campuses. Engage in outreach and consultation efforts to increase 
effective collaboration, consultation and communication between Penn 
State Learning and the University's academic colleges and campuses. 
Develop and administer the Penn State Learning budget and facilities, 
seek and secure external funding, and prepare grant proposals as 
appropriate. Engage in regular learning assessment and program 
evaluation. Serve on University committees and work groups and undertake 
special projects at the request of the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Minimum requirements are a Master's degree (Doctorate preferred), 
significant experience with and responsibility for meaningful elements 
of student success, staff and/or faculty supervision or comparable 
supervisory experience, appropriate track record of scholarly or 
professional publication, familiarity with effective student learning 
practices, recognition of public scholarship processes and practices, 
respect for the deliberative process, and commitment to the values 
inherent in successful learning communities. College or university-level 
teaching experience and success developing outside funding are also desired.

The current director is retiring, so this is a replacement position. 
Penn State Learning is looking to build on some recent initiatives to 
rethink the whole concept of learning assistance in a learning outcomes 
model.
