Researchers in Livermore California are using "four different
imaging techniques to systematically drill down deep into the
cells of Zinnia elegans." They are able to see detailed surfaces
of cells and make out chemical composition, which will give better
understanding of the nature of cell walls. Production of any
lignocellulosic biofuel is dependent on effectively breaking the
cell wall and releasing valuable sugars therefore, these imaging
techniques may really help our ability to extract liquid fuel from
biomass.
