California State University, Fullerton is a large, comprehensive, urban university with approximately 1,670 full- and part-time faculty and a diverse student body of approximately over 35,500 enrolled in Fall 2010.

Position
The Reading Department at Cal State Fullerton offers an NCATE accredited MSE with a Concentration in Reading, and is authorized by the California Council on Teacher Certification to offer the California Reading Certificate and the California Reading/Language Arts Specialist Credential. The graduate programs are offered on the main campus, the Irvine campus, and at school-based cohort sites.
In addition to the graduate programs, the Department provides undergraduate courses in developmental reading, early literacy development, and multiple sections of a general education course in critical reading. The latter course builds the core competencies and habits of mind necessary for college success and lifelong learning, and has served as a model for similar courses in community colleges across our service area.
The Department is seeking an enthusiastic, committed, and highly qualified individual to teach and fulfill all other obligations of a tenure-track faculty member in an interdisciplinary collaborative environment. The successful candidate will:
Teach graduate courses in reading, to include at least 2 of the following: beginning reading instruction; content area reading; reading assessment; intervention and remediation; interfaces of linguistics and reading; sociocultural contexts of language and literacy; instructional technology, cognition and learning, curriculum theory, academic literacy, college/adult reading and learning, and research methodology related to reading.
Potentially teach undergraduate courses in developmental reading, academic literacy and/or critical reading and thinking.
Use state-of-the art technology to teach and/or create face-to-face, hybrid (partially online), and 100% online courses.
Engage in a focused agenda of scholarly endeavor.
Teach face-to-face courses on the main campus, the Irvine campus, and/or at cohort sites.
Provide academic advisement and participate in department, University, and community service.
Qualifications
Must have a doctorate in education with a concentration in reading and/or literacy from an accredited institution.
Must have a minimum of 21 units of graduate coursework in reading, including but not limited to foundational knowledge, curriculum and instruction, assessment, diversity, adult learning, creating a literate environment, and professional learning and leadership, as these relate to reading pre-K-adult.
Must have a record of demonstrated excellence in the teaching of reading, with a minimum of 3 years successful full-time K-12 teaching experience, including the teaching of reading.
Must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community, and be committed to the preparation of graduates able to meet the needs of the diverse populations of todays public schools and/or community colleges.
Must have evidence of or demonstrated strong potential for scholarly and creative activity, and a focused research agenda for advancing knowledge in the field of reading and/or literacy(K-adult).
Must have a record of engagement in professional service activities that align with the advancement of the field of reading.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer demonstrated teaching of graduate courses in curriculum theory and
research methods.
Prefer demonstrated teaching experience working inclusively with culturally and
linguistically diverse student populations using innovative instructional
approaches and methods.
Prefer successful experience creating and/or teaching online courses.
Prefer successful teaching of reading at the community college and/or university
level.
Rank & Salary
This is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Salary is competitive and commensurate to rank, experience and qualifications. Periodic salary adjustments are enacted by the state legislature.
