I have used the Nutch open-source webcrawler (nutch.apache.org) in the
past and then exported the links from crawls to R and used the igraph
package for SNA analysis. If you don't need to customize anything
about the crawler, this wouldn't require any programming on your
student's part. Your student is right that there aren't any crawlers
that would export things in a SNA-specific way. At least, I don't
know of any. Your student will have to massage the data a bit.
