This maintenance company reports that a similar problem occurred last year, but the property is irrigated.

Greetings:
I saw a similar problem about 4 years ago with laurel oaks. The trees affected were in a line, with plenty of room to grow. Not all trees were affected. The trees were field grown and had already been in the ground about 3 years. They were also about the same heights as your trees. Dieback began in no particular part of the tree but the whole canopy eventually declined with the leaves still hanging onto the trees. No insects were found and no disease apparent. The problem was in spring. The trees were taken out that year.
I sort of attributed the problem to drought as the trees were not irrigated.

Those are good ideas Jane.
But it's unlikely that several trees would suffer circling roots at the same time.
I didn't look at the roots below ground but no conks or anything unusual was showing above ground.

The cross section looks similar to palms with ganoderma. Did you get a chance to look at the roots? Wondering if they were circling as if still in the pot. That would account for water stress even under irrigation.

Have been seeing some of this too on live oaks; yours look like laurel oaks?
I don't think it is disease. I've been chalking most of it up to dry, dry, dry conditions and girdling roots. But the trees with the lower branches browning first is puzzling. MaNY OF THE BRANCHES HERE, WHICH HAD BROWNING, ALSO HAD GREEN BUDS OR CAMBIUM...(HATE THAT CAPS KEY!).....

I have an oak tree problem that has me stumped.
At first glance it looks like a pesticide problem, but the evidence is muddy at best.
