I also agree with Lisa and Diana that LA and DE are different fields. At
Clemson, we do not offer any developmental education programs. And at the
Academic Success Center, we focus on learning strategies (thanks Saundra
McGuire for stressing this terminology at the NCLCA Institute last month)
and helping good students be better - learning assistance.
And as an aside, my PhD is not in learning/academic support - but a
research degree in reproductive physiology. So I may be an odd duck, but
I find that all my past experiences in teaching and working with students,
serve me well in this position. I also think that being a tenured full
professor has helped as we have built a strong relationships with faculty
from a variety of disciplines across campus. Bottom line - our field is
not a "one size fits all"!
