Dear Marten,
You might ask Matthias Rau (JGU Mainz) for further information. See also his
forthcoming paper:

Netzwerken unter Berücksichtigung eines alternativen Erhebungsvorschlags".

Abstract
"The density is often regarded as an important structural attribute to
describe social networks. This contribution presents theoretical
considerations on density in context with ego-centred network analysis. In
the following, it introduces a commonly used method to measure density in
ego-networks and contrasts it with an alternative proposal. The paper
concludes with an outlook on future research."
He also starts off with Dunbar's number.
Greetings
Linda

Subject: [SOCNET] Question regarding the human mind's capacity to make sense
of network structures
Hi all
I am wondering whether someone could point me to research on the human
mind's capacity to map and make sense of (social) network structures
independently from any external tools. In other words: Up to which number
of actors and ties are we able to understand network structures fairly
well?
Thanks
Marten
