My understanding was that he was saying he had 12 of the exact same drawing, but they may be different.
Typically when a set of drawings is issued, particularly "shop drawings" wherein a manufacturer is issuing the set, many duplicate sets will be required by contract so that the various parties involved can review/approve the sets. After the project is completed, all of those duplicates are not needed and are not required to be kept. Alex's advice of one "use" copy and one backup copy is a responsible course of action.
