Hello BEST,
Last month, volunteers at a music festival in Nelsonville Ohio were
able to divert 3,090 pounds (1401.6 kg) of trashed material away from
the landfill, resulting in “1,234 pounds of recyclables and 1,856
pounds of compost.” The organizer, Rural Action, spearheaded this
supposed two-fold increase in diversion rate from the previous year’s
event through their Zero Waste Initiative. Ultimately, however, it was
vendor and audience participation, along with the 150 volunteers who
shifted through hundreds of bags of trash, which lead to the success of
the operation. Reports such as this serve to illustrate how communities
can, indeed, work together to create responsible, sustainable changes.
Cheers,
