Hello BEST,
A Yale research team has been working to simplify the process of
extracting the lipids from algae in order to convert them into
biodiesel. Lindsey Soh, a graduate student working under Julie
Zimmerman, Ph.D., has been using supercritical carbon dioxide in an
efficient and environmentally friendly single-step process.
Supercritical carbon dioxide is already used industrially for such
processes as decaffeinating coffee, possibly allowing for an easy
transition from a laboratory procedure to an industrialized process.
Cheers,
