Hello BESTers,
Thanks to Dr. Wayne Smith for passing this article along. Major UK
food retailers, including Tesco, Waitrose, Walmart, Marks & Spencer, and
Sainsbury are taking the task of reducing their food waste head-on. In
light of a $98 per ton landfill, which will increase each year, and
subsidies for waste-to-energy projects, supermarkets are aggressively
seeking to divert their food waste for bioenergy. Marks & Spencer has
pledged to reach zero-waste and is currently sending 89% of its food
waste to biogas facilities. Tesco recycles 2000 metric tons of used oil
and chicken fat into biodiesel. Sainsbury has partnered to construct 40
new biogas plants. How much longer until US supermarkets follow the
lead of their British counterparts?
Have a great weekend,
Ryan
