Hello BESTers,
The Leamington/Kingsville area of southern Ontario is the largest
concentration of greenhouses in North America, with over 1600 acres.
One thing greenhouses need, especially in cooler climates, is a source
of heat. A producer in the area, Pelee Hydroponics, is using biogas
produced from an anaerobic digester they had installed as a source of
heat. The digester is treating food and animal waste from local farms
and greenhouses in a two-phase digestion system. The biogas is
combusted in a combined heat and power generator, in which electricity
is sold back to the grid and "waste" heat is used to heat their
greenhouses and neighbors' greenhouses. The project further
demonstrates the number of applications for anaerobic digestion
technology.
Have a great weekend,
Ryan
