RE: March 1: SPICE Graduate Fellowship Application Deadline!

Applications for 2013-2014 SPICE Graduate Fellowships are due Friday, March 1 2013.

SPICE (Science Partners in Inquiry-based Collaborative Education) is a middle school science education program in its eighth year here at the University of Florida.

The fellowship requires a two-year commitment. During the first year, fellows will teach in middle schools 2 days/week, and will receive a stipend of $24,000 plus tuition, fees and health insurance. During the second year, they will teach approximately 2 days/month and receive a stipend of $3,500.

Through SPICE, graduate students in the sciences and engineering are trained in inquiry-based teaching methods and effective science communication. Each fellow is paired with an Alachua County Public School teacher to co-teach in middle school classrooms.

A primary goal of SPICE is to enhance communication skills and outreach abilities of graduate students. Graduate students interested in outreach or teaching at any level will benefit. Another goal of SPICE is to spark interest in science, engineering and math among Gainesville's disadvantaged youth.

The theme of SPICE is Ecosystem Health, but applicants do not need to be conducting research on ecosystem health -- only possess a willingness to include the theme in some lessons. Complete training is provided.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering or College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Graduate students in groups currently underrepresented in science and engineering are especially encouraged to apply.

Application materials are available online at:
