RE:    Call for Entries: ILR Student Research on Aging Exposition (Due February 11)


The Third Annual ILR Student Research on Aging Exposition and Awards is a great chance for post-docs, graduate students and undergraduate students involved in research that is related to aging in any manner or domain to present their research and potentially win an award. Posters can be ones that have been presented in the last couple of years at professional conferences on 'in- house' presentations - so this is a low-effort opportunity for students to disseminate their research results and have a chance to be recognized. The ILR invites graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and undergraduate students to present their research at the "ILR Student Research on Aging Exposition." All research should be presented in poster format and address topics related to late life and/or associated age-related conditions. The applicant must be first author on the poster. Top presenters will receive respectively: 1st place-$300, 2nd place-$250, 3rd place-$200, two honorary mentions - $75 each. Winners will receive their awards at the ILR Appreciation and Awards Gathering, March 27, 2013 at 5:30 pm, Oak Hammock, Oak Room.

Deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday, February 11, 2013 by 5 pm, to Bob Porter, [log in to unmask] Please use the attached form to submit your abstract. The exposition will be held at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida, in the Oak Room. Oak Hammock is located at Williston Road and SW 25th Terrace, Gainesville.

All applicants must display their posters at the exposition on Feb. 19 from 6:30 - 7:30 at a reception (set up by 6 pm; student must attend to present poster). From those posters presented, five finalists will be chosen (by 9 pm) who must be available to present their poster research orally the next day, Feb. 20 from 10:00 - 11:30 am (arrive 9:45). Each talk will be ten minutes, followed directly by five minutes for questions from the audience. Final winners will then be chosen. For projection purposes, each presenter is asked to bring a thumb drive with an e-version of their poster. Students and their mentors are invited for lunch following this session.

Judging will be completed by a panel of three ILR members with related professional experience. Criteria will include: aging relevance, clarity of topic/application, originality and organization, depth of understanding, visuals, oral presentation, professionalism, acknowledgement of collaborators, response to questions.

The Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) is a cooperative venture between Oak Hammock and UF. Continuing education programs are presented by University of Florida professors, as well as other experts, in particular fields of study - and classes are held on the Oak Hammock campus. For many years, the ILR has showed substantial support for research and training in aging at UF. The ILR also sponsors an annual student research award.
