Hello BESTers,
Kroger, the nation's largest grocery store chain, has installed a food
waste digester at one of its distribution centers in Compton, CA. The
digester will handle 55,000 tons of leftover food that cannot be sold or
donated. The biogas produced by the digester will offset 20% of the
energy needs at the distribution center and significantly reduce the
miles needed to truck the food waste to its previous disposal site. The
biofertilizer from the digester is also used on farms nearby. Let's
hope that Publix is paying attention to this so someday we will see
supermarket food waste digestion in Florida.
Have a great weekend,
Ryan
