Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)
The University of Florida Center for European Studies anticipates awarding Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for summer 2014 and academic year 2014-15. These fellowships are funded by the US Department of Education under Title VI of the Higher Education Act. Fellowships are awarded to graduate and undergraduate students working in European area and language studies. Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted to a degree program at the University of Florida, or be in the process of applying to a UF graduate program. Fellowships are available for the following lesser and least commonly taught European languages: Catalan, Czech, Hungarian, Italian, modern Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Turkish.
Funding may also be available to support advanced language training in French, German or Spanish at the graduate level. Only undergraduate students pursuing language study at the intermediate and advanced level of the languages listed above are eligible for FLAS funding.
Summer fellowships cover tuition at the host institution (actual cost up to $5,000) and provide a stipend ($2,500). Summer travel awards covering the actual cost of travel up to $1,000 may also be available. Academic year fellowships provide a set stipend per academic year ($15,000 for graduate and $5,000 for undergraduate students) and cover the cost of in-state tuition and fees (12 credits per semester).
Fellowship recipients must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States and be admitted to a graduate or undergraduate program at the University of Florida.
Application Deadline: January 17, 2014
