HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Spring Honors Banquet Information:
Tickets to the Spring Honors Banquet are on sale now at https://ufhonorsbanquet14.eventbrite.com. Tickets are $5 and must be paid in cash within 3 business days of ordering your ticket or it will be canceled. The banquet will take place from 6:00-8:30pm at the Florida Museum of Natural History in the UF Cultural Plaza.

Students who would like to serve as the keynote speaker should submit a 5-10 minute typed speech by March 18 at 11:59pm to Dana D'Haeseleer at [log in to unmask] The topic is: How Honors has shaped who you are today.

Students who are interested in providing entertainment for the event should contact Michelle Amit at [log in to unmask] Any equipment needed must be provided by the entertainer. Entertainment will occur from 6:00-6:45pm.

Don't forget to submit your nominations for Honors Professor of the Year! This prestigious award is presented to an honors professor who has demonstrated outstanding mentorship, leadership, and enthusiasm for teaching and challenging his or her students. Please submit nominations of up to 350 words to Kristen Burke at [log in to unmask] by March 21 at 11:59pm. Honors advisors and the director are not eligible. 

2.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: Registration Tip - Summer Prereqs for Fall Courses (NEW POSTING):
If you are registering for a summer course at UF that is a prerequisite for a fall course, please note that you must wait a day to register for the fall course. ISIS takes overnight to recognize that you have met the prerequisite for the fall course. Advisors are not able to override this issue.

Here's an example: Say you are registering for MAC2312 for summer and MAC2313 for fall. You register for MAC2312 on Thursday. You must wait until Friday to register for MAC2313 so that ISIS recognizes you've registered for its prerequisite. 

If you are registering for a summer course at another institution that is a prerequisite for a fall course, you should contact the department offering the fall course for more information. ISIS will not know that you are registering for a course at another institution, so it will not know that you are meeting the fall prerequisite. Again, advisors are not able to override this issue. 

3.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: Honors Completion Requirements Workshops for Seniors:
Are you graduating this semester or this summer? Planning to complete the Honors Program using the new requirements for the medallion? Dr. Johnson is offering three upcoming workshops to explain the requirements and portfolio:

- Wednesday, March 19 from 5:15-6:00pm in the Hume classroom.
- Friday, March 21 from 2:00-2:45pm in 302 Infirmary (use the elevator).
- Thursday, March 27 from 9:45-10:30am in 302 Infirmary (use the elevator).

Please RSVP to [log in to unmask] by Wednesday, March 19 at noon if you are planning to attend a workshop. Note, these workshops are only open to seniors who are graduating this May or August.

4.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: No-Show Policy:
As you may know, the Honors Office is currently understaffed while we complete our search for a new honors advisor. Advising appointments will be limited during advanced registration since there are only two advisors available - both of whom are covering additional responsibilities. As such, we have had to develop a new policy for students who don't show up for their advising appointments. 

If you make an advising appointment and do not show up, you will not be allowed to make another appointment with an honors advisor until after April 10. You may still come during walk-in hours for quick questions only. 

We have very limited availability right now. Not only is it disrespectful to advisors to not show up for time we have set aside for you, but it is also disrespectful to your peers who are trying to get in to see an advisor and could have used your appointment time. 

If you have made an advising appointment and find that you cannot keep it, please cancel at least 24 hours in advance so another student can take your appointment. You should cancel by calling (352) 392-1519. Remember, we do not make same-day appointments.

5.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: Taking Courses Elsewhere this Summer:
Are you thinking about taking a course elsewhere this summer? You must get the approval of your college advising office (honors advisors cannot do this) prior to doing so. For more information, see http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/currents/transients.html 

Certain colleges may have additional requirements or guidelines for taking courses elsewhere. For example, see the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences http://www.advising.ufl.edu/information/trans.html and the College of Business http://warrington.ufl.edu/undergraduate/myheavener/transient.asp. Please meet with your college directly if you have questions.

Also note that if you are planning to take a course elsewhere this summer in hopes of fulfilling the 9 hour summer requirement, courses must be taken at one of the State University System institutions. Community colleges (including those converted to state colleges) and private colleges do not count. 6.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: Save the Date - Early Honors Registration:
Early registration for current first-year students in the Honors Program will take place from 9:00am-5:00pm on March 20 and 21 via ISIS. Early registration this semester is only open to honors students who entered UF in Summer B or Fall 2013 (this includes lateral admits who started Honors in spring 2014). 

You will be able to register for up to 10 credits of any classes, not just honors courses. Note, if you are registering for both summer and fall courses, you will get up to 10 credits for each term. As always, the early registration time will NOT appear on ISIS - you are responsible for remembering it is taking place.

You will not be able to register early if:
- You entered UF prior to Summer / Fall 2013
- Your GPA is below a 3.0
- You have a HOLD on your record
- You do not have the prerequisites for the course you are trying to add
- The course you are trying to add is full or departmentally controlled

7.	INTERNSHIP: 2014-2015 Honors Special Events Interns:
Up to four honors students will be selected to serve as special events coordinators for the Honors Program during the 2014-2015 academic year. Interns will have the opportunity to work with all aspects of event coordination, including facility arrangements and other logistical planning, communication with clients and other stakeholders, advertising and public relations, event setup and execution, and event evaluation and follow-up. Interns must be able to work independently, quickly, and under pressure; have excellent written and oral communication skills; and exhibit a close attention to details.

Under supervision of the Honors Office, interns will be expected to coordinate a major program in the fall and the annual Honors Banquet in April. There is potential to add smaller events throughout the year based on the interests of the interns. 

Applicants should be rising juniors, although rising seniors may also be considered. Preference will be given to applicants who will not be involved in a major capacity with another honors student organization next year. Students selected will be registered for 1 Honors Internship credit during the fall and spring semesters, although the tuition for that credit will be reimbursed by the Honors Office. Please think carefully about other commitments before applying - Honors interns carry a great deal of responsibility and must be willing to commit fully to the position.

To apply, please submit a cover letter detailing your interest in applying for this internship, as well as a 1-2 page resume highlighting only your experiences coordinating events or similar activities. 8.	JOB OPPORTUNITY: Honors Office Student Assistants Starting This Summer: 
The Honors Office is hiring two part-time student assistants starting this summer. Preference will be given to students who potentially could work with Honors long-term (i.e. freshmen and sophomores). 

We're looking for responsible, professional honors students who work well with others and enjoy plenty of interaction with students and their parents. Customer service experience is a plus! Applicants must be comfortable with computers as well, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite. Historically the Honors Program's most successful student assistants have demonstrated strong leadership skills and have exhibited careful attention to detail in every aspect of the job. While working in the office, student assistants will answer phones, assist with Preview over the summer, and handle administrative tasks as needed.

9.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Dance  Marathon Kickoff Tickets (NEW POSTING):

10.	EVENT: Honors Invades Bowling:
Time to put on your bowling shoes! That's right, Honors is going bowling on Wednesday, March 19. We'll be having a walk-over to the Reitz Game Room, meeting at the Hume Arches at 7:45pm, and bowling will commence at 8:00pm. So grab your friends and floor mates and "SHO" the Gator nation just what you've got. Let's Bowl!

11.	EVENT: SHO Open Mic Night (TODAY):
SHO will be hosting an Open Mic Night in the Graham Gallery on Tuesday, March 18, starting at 8:00pm. Each performer is responsible for arriving on time and checking in, as well as bringing any necessary equipment (musical instruments, etc). There will be microphones and speakers set up. 12.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Taking on Tallahassee: Navigating the Florida Legislature:
Join former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Hyatt Brown and former Florida Governor Bob Graham as they discuss a host of political issues of the day, including Florida politics and the importance of civic engagement. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 19 at 6:00pm in the Pugh Hall Ocora. The event and parking are free and open to the public. The event will be streamed live at www.bobgrahamcenter.ufl.edu.

13.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: MS in Management Info Session (TODAY):

The Center for Leadership and Service's Student Advisory Board (SAB) is accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year. The SAB is composed of a select group of outstanding student leaders who are dedicated to leadership, community service, and/or philanthropy. 18.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Backpack Iceland Registration (NEW POSTING):
TRiP is backpacking Iceland this summer from July 26 to  August 6! Registration begins at 8:00pm on Wednesday, March 19 in The Outfitter (on the ground floor of the Reitz Union). 19.	EVENT: ACCENT Speakers Bureau Presents: Jonah Peretti (NEW POSTING):
Join ACCENT Speakers Bureau on Thursday, March 20 at the Phillips Center for an evening of entrepreneurship, insight, and inspiration with one of the leading media innovators of the 21st century.

Jonah Peretti, the Founder & CEO of BuzzFeed and a Co-Founder of the Huffington Post, will discuss journalism, the evolving media landscape, and his career before participating in an open Q&A with the audience.
 
Student tickets will be available for pickup at the Phillips Center Box Office at 12:00pm the day before the show (March 19). Students with a valid UF ID can receive up to two tickets. As always, admission is free! Doors open at 7:00pm, and the program begins at 8:00pm.

20.	EVENT: Tips and Tricks for Today's Women in Business (NEW POSTING):
The UF Women's Student Association, Entrepreneurship Club at University of Florida, and BOSS Women present this comprehensive event as a part of Women's History Month. Resume and cover letter critiquing begin at 2:00pm. Workshops include interviewing and public speaking tips from UF's Debate Team, a presentation on the expanding field of social entrepreneurship by Dr. Kristin Joos, and advice from a local businesswoman. It will be hosted on Thursday, March 20 from 2:00-4:30pm in the Matthew's Suite on the fourth floor of the Reitz Union. Check out facebook.com/ufwhm for more information.

21.	EVENT: Stride Against Silence 5K Run/Walk (NEW POSTING):
Stride Against Silence is a 5K run/walk to raise funds for the Cochlear Implant Department at the UF Health Speech and Audiology Center. The race is taking place on March 22 at 8:30am starting and ending at the Commuter Lot on Gale Lemerand Drive. Registration is $20 and includes free breakfast, a raffle ticket, and an event t-shirt for the first 100 participants.

22.	EVENT: NEDA Walk to End Eating Disorders (NEW POSTING):
Please join us for the 2nd annual National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) Walk on March 22 at the O'Connell Center. This event is a non-competitive 3K walk in which proceeds support critical programs and services that work to eliminate eating disorders and improve prevention, treatment, and research. 

Check-in at 10:30am; Walk is from 11:00am-1:00pm

Registration Cost: Only $15 for students (100% proceeds go to NEDA)

23.	EVENT: Cobra Strike - Philanthropy Dodgeball Tournament (NEW POSTING):
Sigma Beta Rho and The Black Student Union present "Cobra Strike", a charity 5 v 5 dodgeball tournament. It will take place on Sunday, March 23 from 1:00-5:00pm at the Flavet multi-purpose courts on campus. All proceeds of this event will go to SOS Children's villages, Sigma Beta Rho's national philanthropy. Registration is $5 per player with up to 7 players on a team. A team can have males and females. Prizes include a trophy and $50 in gift cards for 1st place and $40 dollars in gift cards for 2nd place. Lastly, payment can be made with cash, Venmo, or Paypal.

24.	EVENT: Brain Awareness Week (TODAY):
Come and learn about your amazing brain! During The Neuroscience Club's annual Brain Awareness Week, you will be able to experiment with optical illusions, play some cool mind games, and even get to hold real brains. There will be arts and crafts and of course plenty of fun facts to blow your mind. Join us on March 17-21 between 10:00am and 2:00pm in the Plaza of the Americas.

25.	EVENT: Caramel Film Screening:
Join the UF Women's Student Association, the Arabic Cultural Association at UF, and RUB Entertainment for a screening of the movie Caramel. This romantic comedy was directed by and stars Nadine Labaki and focuses on the lives of five Lebanese women dealing with issues such as forbidden love, binding traditions, repressed sexuality, the struggle to accept the natural process of age, and duty vs. desire. The film will be screened in the Reitz Auditorium on Wednesday, March 19 at 7:30pm. Check out facebook.com/ufwhm for more information.
