HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Phi Beta Kappa Membership:
Tapped to join Phi Beta Kappa this semester? Don't toss the invitation into the trash, thinking this is one more solicitation for your hard-earned cash. Getting selected for this honorary society is a great accomplishment and recognized by grad schools, law and med schools as meaning you are among the best students academically at your institution.

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest, most selective, and most prestigious liberal arts honor society. Dr. Knudson and Dr. Johnson are both proud members! Dr. K is also the UF chapter vice president.

Phi Beta Kappa will be noted on your transcript and will make a very nice line on your resume. It also has some prestigious awards for graduate study, so if you are a member, take a look at the national website to see what is available. Also see below for an internship opportunity to write for their website next fall.

Standards for election into Phi Beta Kappa are extremely high, and membership is by invitation only. Outstanding GPA is only one consideration, and distribution and diversity of coursework in the liberal arts and sciences is another. For more information, visit http://www.honors.ufl.edu/PBK/Home.aspx or http://www.pbk.org

Also note that induction into Phi Beta Kappa now counts as an academic point towards the new Honors completion requirements.

2.	EVENT: Fulbright Day:
The International Center and the UF Honors Program will be hosting Fulbright Day on Wednesday, April 16 from 9:00am-4:00pm at Smathers Library, Room 100 (formerly 1A).

The Fulbright Program provides funding for students, scholars and faculty to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools.

Come and learn about the application process, and to listen to the experiences of current and past Fulbright scholars and students.

The workshop for students will take place at 3:00pm.

For more information, contact [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask]

HONORS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

3.	EVENT: Student Honors Organization General Body Meeting (NEW POSTING):
The Student Honors Organization will be holding its last general body meeting this Sunday, April 13 at 8:00pm in the Hume Classroom. Come hear about the remaining events that we will be conducting this year. Additionally, we'll be having a discussion as to what you, the general body, would like to see differently in the organization next year.

4.	EVENT: SHO Annual Spring BBQ:
Come out to the Hume Commons this Friday evening at 5:00pm to enjoy some free food and fun as the Student Honors Organization hosts its annual Spring BBQ! Sonny's is catering, and there will be plenty for all SHO members. The executive board will be providing music, a dunk tank, cornhole, design-a-cookie desserts, and a huge inflatable water slide! And to top it all off, this BBQ will also serve as the closing ceremony for Floor Wars, with the winning Hume Hall floor being presented with their award by the current SHO Officers.

For a reminder about the BBQ, join the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/303157803164762

5.	EVENT: Honors Without Borders Final Meeting and Elections (TODAY):
It all ends Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 in NPB1011. This is Honors Without Borders' last meeting of the semester (though we still have events continuing afterward), and we will be having elections. This is an extremely important meeting for us, as members who are active will be allowed to vote for this upcoming year's exec board. And we will be providing Zaxby's. That's right. You're going to want to be there!

6.	EVENT: SHO Floor Feud (TODAY):
SHO will be hosting a family feud-style game, pitting floor against floor on Thursday, April 10 from 8:30-10:30pm in the Hume Commons. The floor that wins will earn points toward Floor Wars, as well as a prize. Light refreshments will also be served.

https://www.facebook.com/events/273787772787690/

7.	EVENT: Honors Without Borders Ultimate Tournament:
A co-ed 7v7 charity ultimate tournament for players of all skill-levels, the Honors Without Borders Ultimate Tournament will take place Saturday, April 19 at Hume Field beginning at 3:15pm. The $10 per UF student and $15 per non-UF student collections will go directly to the Cancer Research Institute (http://www.cancerresearch.org). Winners should expect to receive tournament shirts! ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

8.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Department of Political Science Film Series: Reds (NEW POSTING):
The Department of Political Science is hosting a film series for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. All films will be shown in 034 Anderson from 6:00-9:00pm. The idea is to have a relatively informal venue with relatively entertaining films, which nonetheless may have more political significance than the lens through which we may view them when for pure entertainment.

There is an historical trajectory suggested in this film series, as well as a common theme regarding changes in state power, and in the relationship between state/economic/social actors, over time. For more information, please contact the film series coordinator, Patricia Woods, at [log in to unmask]

Monday, April 14: Film - Reds. Two American writers, married to one another, become embroiled in the Bolshevik Revolution. Dean Paul D'Anieri, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will give introductory remarks before our viewing of the film.

9.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Marketing "THAT" for CLAS Majors (TODAY):
The Career Resource Center is teaming with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to have a presentation and networking opportunity to help address the stigmatic question: "What are you going to do with THAT degree?"

The event will include guest speakers, trained CRC staff, refreshments and opportunity for connecting and networking. The goal is to give useful advice to CLAS students on how to market themselves here at UF and in their future career search. Come to the Pugh Ocora on Thursday, April 10 from 5:00-7:00pm to utilize this unique opportunity just for CLAS students.

10.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Creative Practices Symposium:
Please join us for a great discussion of creative practices inside and outside the classroom, studio, laboratory, start-up and working contexts. The morning will feature presentations from three nationally recognized leaders whose research focuses on creativity from a multiplicity of disciplines and perspectives. The panel will be followed by breakout sessions with the panelists and UF moderators. Breakfast and lunch are included. This event takes place on Friday, April 25 from 8:00am-1:00pm in MUB101. Sponsored by the UF Creative Campus Initiative, Florida Innovation Hub, UF Honors Program, and the UF College of Fine Arts.
