HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ANNOUNCEMENT: No Walk-in Advising on Wednesday (NEW POSTING):
Due to Fulbright Day on Wednesday, Regan's walk-in advising hours are canceled. If you need to meet with an honors advisor, you can call the Honors Office to make an appointment at (352) 392-1519.

2.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Honors Completion Portfolios Deadline for Seniors:
Students who are graduating this semester and plan to submit their portfolio to earn the Honors medallion must do so by Friday, April 18 at 5:00pm in 343 Infirmary. Portfolios include the cover sheet found online, an unofficial transcript, and all documentation needed to show how you have earned your 8 academic points and 6 enrichment points. For more information, visit http://www.honors.ufl.edu/Completion-Requirements.aspx . Questions? Contact Dr. Johnson at [log in to unmask], but please review the website first.

3.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Phi Beta Kappa Membership:
Tapped to join Phi Beta Kappa this semester? Don't toss the invitation into the trash, thinking this is one more solicitation for your hard-earned cash. Getting selected for this honorary society is a great accomplishment and recognized by grad schools, law and med schools as meaning you are among the best students academically at your institution.

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest, most selective, and most prestigious liberal arts honor society. Dr. Knudson and Dr. Johnson are both proud members! Dr. K is also the UF chapter vice president.

Phi Beta Kappa will be noted on your transcript and will make a very nice line on your resume. It also has some prestigious awards for graduate study, so if you are a member, take a look at the national website to see what is available. Also see below for an internship opportunity to write for their website next fall.

Standards for election into Phi Beta Kappa are extremely high, and membership is by invitation only. Outstanding GPA is only one consideration, and distribution and diversity of coursework in the liberal arts and sciences is another. For more information, visit http://www.honors.ufl.edu/PBK/Home.aspx or http://www.pbk.org

Also note that induction into Phi Beta Kappa now counts as an academic point towards the new Honors completion requirements.

4.	EVENT: Fulbright Day:
The International Center and the UF Honors Program will be hosting Fulbright Day on Wednesday, April 16 from 9:00am-4:00pm at Smathers Library, Room 100 (formerly 1A).

The Fulbright Program provides funding for students, scholars and faculty to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools.

Come and learn about the application process, and to listen to the experiences of current and past Fulbright scholars and students.

The workshop for students will take place at 3:00pm.

ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

7.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Bridging Indigenous and Scientific Knowledges: Multicultural Solutions for Climate Change Research (NEW POSTING, TODAY):
The Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere is happy to announce that we will be hosting a lecture featuring Kyle Whyte, a philosophy professor from Michigan State University on Monday, April 14 at 5:30pm in Weil Hall, room 270.

Kyle Whyte is a premier scholar in the dynamic research field of environmental change, particularly relating to the ethics of how such changes affect Indigenous and Native American communities. Indigenous peoples living in North America have long been affected by climate change, but these communities face obstacles in discussing solutions with scientists. Whyte's research investigates how individuals from different backgrounds can come together, build trust, and share knowledge from elders of Indigenous communities and climate scientists.

8.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Department of Political Science Film Series: Reds (TODAY):
The Department of Political Science is hosting a film series for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. All films will be shown in 034 Anderson from 6:00-9:00pm. The idea is to have a relatively informal venue with relatively entertaining films, which nonetheless may have more political significance than the lens through which we may view them when for pure entertainment.

There is an historical trajectory suggested in this film series, as well as a common theme regarding changes in state power, and in the relationship between state/economic/social actors, over time. For more information, please contact the film series coordinator, Patricia Woods, at [log in to unmask]

Monday, April 14: Film - Reds. Two American writers, married to one another, become embroiled in the Bolshevik Revolution. Dean Paul D'Anieri, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will give introductory remarks before our viewing of the film.

9.	JOB OPPORTUNITY: Federal Work Study Positions with America Reads:
America Reads at UF is a collaborative project designed to provide literacy tutoring to at-risk students in the Gainesville community. Tutoring takes place at a variety of locations, including local schools and community centers. Paid Positions are available for students enrolled at the University of Florida who are eligible to receive Federal Work Study as a form of financial aid. Visit http://education.ufl.edu/america-reads/ for more information about America Reads. Contact America Reads at [log in to unmask] for application details.

LEADERSHIP AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

10.	LEADERSHIP: Engineering Leadership Circle Applications (NEW POSTING):
Engineering Leadership Circle (ELC) is now accepting applications for Spring 2014 inductions. ELC is an honorary society whose purpose is to distinguish those students and alumni in engineering who have shown exceptional leadership ability or potential, exemplary character, and endeavor to foster the spirit of unity among leaders and pride in the engineering profession.
