HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Blog for the Honors Program:
Do you have something interesting to say? Are you a good writer? Do you like the Honors Program and want to get involved? We're currently looking for official Honors Program bloggers for the 2014-2015 academic year. Bloggers would need to commit to posting at least 2-3 blogs/month. We have a blog written by first-year students, second-year students, and upper-class students (3rd year +). 

If you are interested, please email Dr. Johnson at [log in to unmask] . Include a short writing sample, a link to your blog if you have one, and a statement of interest indicating why you want to be a blogger, which blog you are applying for, and a few blog topic ideas. You do not need to have blogging experience.

If you are a veteran blogger who would like to blog again this year, please contact Dr. Johnson indicating as such.

2.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Text Message Reminders from Honors:
You can now sign up to receive periodic text message notifications from the Honors Program. Please note this is completely optional, and we are not going to spam your phone. This service is free, but your standard text messaging rates apply. To opt in to this service, you can do one of two things:

Or enter your number at https://www.remind.com/join/ufhonors

Either way, we will not be able to see your phone number, but we will be able to send you texts until you opt out.

3.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Fall Degree Application Deadline (NEW POSTING):
If you are planning to graduate in December, the deadline to apply to graduate is September 19. For more information, visit http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/currents/degreeapp.html 

The deadline to submit Honors Program completion paperwork for fall graduates is December 5 at 4:30pm in 343 Infirmary. For more information, visit http://www.honors.ufl.edu/Completion-Requirements.aspx  

4.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Lateral Admission into Honors:
Do you have friends who are first-year students and would like to join the UF Honors Program? Let them know about lateral admissions! Lateral admission is open to any first-year student who started Summer B or Fall 2014. Those interested in applying are required to attend an information session in September in order to access the online application. For more information, direct them to http://www.honors.ufl.edu/Lateral.aspx . Note, this is the last opportunity for students to join the Honors Program. Unfortunately, there is not a lateral admissions process for students in the Innovation Academy or for transfer students.

Also, if you are in the various UF Class of 2018 Facebook groups, please share there for us! We want to make sure the word is out.

5.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Alcohol Education Requirement for First-Year Students:
All first-year students now have a hold in ISIS requiring you to complete the New Student Alcohol Education Program. You will need to complete this online seminar and clear the hold prior to spring course registration (end of October!). You should be able to access this seminar via ISIS. Please note, this is a university-wide requirement for new students.

6.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Honors Advising:
Starting September 2, we will be taking appointments for honors advising again. Please call (352) 392-1519 to request an appointment to meet with an honors advisor. Please do not email an advisor directly to request an appointment, as our front office handles their calendars. 

Appointments are made for 30 minutes, and we do not take same-day appointments. If you need to cancel an appointment, we request advanced notice. Students who simply do not show up for their appointment may not be allowed to make another appointment for a specified amount of time.

Potential topics for honors advising appointments: long-term planning, academic and/or extracurricular involvement, double majors/minors, graduate/professional school, etc.

Very specific questions regarding major requirements or certain courses in your major should be referred to your major/college advisor. Also note that if you need to change your major, you should meet with the college advising office of the major you intend to change into. If you need to drop a course after drop/add week, you should go to your college advising office. College advising contacts are available here: http://www.ufadvising.ufl.edu/advisers.aspx 

Fall walk-in hours for quick questions will take place each week with Kristy Spear in 343 Infirmary:
Tuesdays, 10:00am-12:00pm
Wednesdays, 2:00-4:00pm

7.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Honors Coaching Appointments:
Dr. Johnson is starting a new initiative this semester to help Honors students develop strategic plans for areas in which they want to grow or strengthen. If you are looking for specific feedback in a particular area and are willing to commit to following up / through with the plans made during the meeting, make a coaching appointment.

Coaching is not a time to discuss course schedules. Initial appointments are made for 30 minutes, but follow-up meetings may be made for longer depending on student needs. Call (352) 392-1519 to make an appointment. Please specify that you want a coaching appointment with Dr. Johnson, as well as leave information about the intended focus of your visit.

8.	EVENT: Peace Corps Info Session for Honors Gators:
Be part of a new generation of leaders making a difference. As a Peace Corps Volunteer, you will work directly with communities on their most pressing issues while gaining a competitive advantage in today's global economy with international experience, cross-cultural understanding, and fluency in a foreign language. 

Peace Corps experience can springboard careers in the government, nonprofit, academic, and private sectors. Peace Corps is a life defining leadership experience where Volunteers live, learn and work in a local community for 27 months in one of 65 countries that we currently serve. We offer six program areas: education, health, youth development, agriculture, environment and business/information communication technology. 

Join us at this Honors information session to speak with regional recruiter Chad Chernet to learn about Volunteer experiences, have your questions answered, and gain tips to guide you through the application process. The info session will take place on Monday, September 8, from 3:00-4:00pm in 302 Infirmary.

Take the next step towards Peace Corps service. Explore Volunteer openings that are now available. Our Southeast regional staff of recruiters, all of whom served in the Peace Corps themselves, can tell you what it's really like to Volunteer, whether or not you qualify, and how to work through the application process. 9.	INTERNSHIP: Honors Photography Interns (NEW POSTING): 
The Honors Program is seeking students to serve as official photographers for this academic year. Responsibilities include producing high quality photographs for the Honors website and shooting pictures at various Honors events. At least one intern must be available for our upcoming Honors alumni tailgate prior to the LSU football game on October 11. 

This is an unpaid position, but it is an excellent opportunity for you to build a portfolio of great photos. Interested students should send a few sample photos to Dr. Johnson at [log in to unmask] . Please also indicate availability for the October 11 event.




HONORS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

10.	LEADERSHIP: SHO Executive Board Applications (H-Box) (TODAY):
Applications to join the 2014-2015 SHO executive board are available! All honors students are eligible to apply, which means that you could help plan all of the amazing events going on here at Hume and around the Honors Program. It's a great way to meet new people and get leadership experience right at the beginning of college. All applications are due by 11:55pm on September 5th, and interviews will be the following week. 11.	EVENT: Honors Involvement Conference (HC, H-Box):
Looking for your niche here at UF? Want to get involved on campus but don't know where to start? Come to the *free* 2014 Honors Involvement Conference on Sunday, September 21! It is a great way for students to learn about how to get involved around the UF campus, as well as in the Gainesville area.

Students will be able to attend interactive, informative sessions about Internships & Resume tips, Study Abroad and International Engagement, Leadership & Service, as well as Research. There will also be sessions held to find out How to Survive Honors, to learn more about Getting Active and UF Athletics, about the Gainesville scene, and Staying Cultural. 

This is a wonderful opportunity for students to network and meet people in organizations they may want to join. Several organizations will be represented at the conference with information on how get plugged in.

Attendance at the Conference will also earn you an Enrichment Point toward Honors Completion, as well as an H-Box Honors card.

Breakfast will be provided to all participants.

Registration begins at 8:45am on the second floor of the Reitz Union. The Conference will begin promptly at 9:15am in the Reitz Union Auditorium.

There will be a walk-over from Hume at 8:40am. Meet at the arches.

ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

12.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: ButterflyFest Facebook Photo Challenge:
The Florida Museum of Natural History is hosting the second annual ButterflyFest Facebook Photo Challenge! Capture your best picture of 'wildlife & biodiversity' together and enter by 11:59pm EDT on September 15 for your chance to win prizes. Anyone, at any age, can enter this free challenge. The Museum will post the top 10 images from entries received on its Facebook page on September 22, and the public will select the overall winner online via the most 'likes.' The winning photographers will be recognized during ButterflyFest on Saturday, October 4. 13.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Shaping a Brighter Future for American Health Care - Graham Center Event (H-Box):
As the nation's health care system continues to evolve, the American Medical Association continues to work toward sustainable physician practices that result in better health outcomes for patients. On Monday, September 8 at 6:00pm in Pugh Hall, immediate past president of the AMA (June 18, 2013- June 10, 2014), Dr. Ardis Dee Hoven will discuss the organization's aims to create a brighter future for American health care and ensuring these enhancements are physician-led, advance the physician-patient relationship, and ensure that health care costs can be prudently managed. Dr. Hoven specializes in internal medicine and infectious diseases and has testified before Congress on health care reform. The event and parking are free and open to the public. The event will be streamed live at www.bobgrahamcenter.ufl.edu/.

14.	INTERNSHIP: Enroll America Fall Fellowship in Gainesville (NEW POSTING):
Enroll America is looking for Fall Fellows to do local outreach in the Gainesville area. 

Our Mission: Enroll America is a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to maximizing the number of uninsured Americans who enroll in health coverage. 

The Fellowship: Unpaid Fellows will work with staff, volunteers, and partners to help connect the uninsured to affordable, quality health coverage. Fellows will also have the opportunity to gain advanced skills by participating in one of four program tracks- Grassroots Organizing, Data, Communications & Digital Organizing, and Constituency Outreach and Partner Engagement.

15.	RESEARCH: Research Guidance with CURBS:
The Center for Undergraduate Research Board of Students is pleased to offer undergraduates a quick and easy way to get any questions about research answered. Additionally, they will help guide students through the research process from refining their research interests to helping find a research position that suits a student's needs and interests. Walk-in hours are between 10:00am and 4:00pm, M-W-Th-F. The office is located in Yon Hall, room 429. Yon is the east side of the football stadium, above the student ticket office.

LEADERSHIP AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

16.	VOLUNTEER: UF vs Eastern Michigan - Volunteer for TailGator Recycling:
The Office of Sustainability is looking for volunteers to help with TailGator Recycling this Saturday, September 6!

We have two shifts this weekend: 11:00am-1:00pm and 1:00-3:00pm. As always, volunteer positions are first come, first served. You can sign up via this link through a survey: https://ufl.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_esxkdj7HWT5DtU9

Volunteers will report to the left of McCarty A (if you are facing the building from the North Lawn). You will be able to spot the Office interns and staff members in their Green Team shirts!

An informational email will be sent out later this week for those who sign up. We look forward to greening the campus with you, and we hope to see you Saturday. Go Gators!

17.	LEADERSHIP: UF College Democrats Positions Available:
Apply for one of our Caucus Chair positions or to be our new Communications Director.

We have six caucuses: Women's, LGBT, Black, Hispanic, Environmental, and the Progressive Caucus. Caucus chairs will be in charge of planning and implementing Days of Action, presenting at general body meetings, hosting events, and participating in community events. Candidates should be motivated, creative, and eager to get more involved with the Democratic Party. Applications will close at 11:59pm on September 9. The Communications Director will be primarily responsible for all social media, graphic design, and website maintenance. Applications will close on September 9 at 11:59pm. STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS AND EVENTS 

18.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Fencing Informational Meeting (NEW POSTING):
If you think sword fighting is fun and you want to impress family and friends with a cool new sport, come out and try fencing! There is an informational meeting this Tuesday, September 9, at 8:00pm in front of Gate 1 of the O'Connell Center. There will be fencing demonstrations, and you can see and hold the weapons we use.

19.	STUDENT ORG MEETINGS: Tuesday, September 9:
- TED Club at 7:00pm in Stuzin 103. Focus: Love TED talks? Interested in getting involved in TEDxUF 2015? Watch an interesting TED talk and talk about getting involved. - Network of enlightened Women (NeW) from 7:00-8:00pm or 8:00-9:00pm at the Chi Omega sorority house on sorority row. Focus: A student organization for young women with conservative ideals. 20.	EVENT: Speed Faithing:
On Monday, September 8 at 7:00pm, join the Interfaith Ambassadors for our first event, Speed Faithing, at the Florida Gym. At Speed Faithing, you will have the opportunity to learn about myriad religions like Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and more. Plus, you will also have the chance to ask questions about Atheism, Agnosticism, and other ideologies.
