Clemson University invites applications for the
Director of the Academic Success Center
Strategically located midway between Atlanta and Charlotte on the I-85 economic corridor, Clemson University is the land-grant university of South Carolina and, according to US News & World Report, ranks #21 among the country’s top national public universities. The University has over 21,000 students (including nearly 17,000 undergraduates) who can select from 80 undergraduate and 110 graduate degree programs. Clemson employs over 1100 full-time faculty and has an annual budget expenditure of over $900 million.
Established in 2001, the Academic Success Center has been recognized nationally and internationally by organizations related to tutoring, supplemental instruction and collegiate learning. For its 50th anniversary, the Class of 1956 initiated fundraising for a new building. Dr. Theodore G. Westmoreland, a member of the Class of 1956, then established a $1.5 million endowment to support the academic success programs housed in the Class of 1956 Academic Success Center, which opened to begin serving students in the spring semester of 2012.
The mission of the Academic Success Center is to empower undergraduate students to achieve their academic goals by providing opportunities to enhance student learning, academic success, and personal growth. Our vision is to prepare undergraduate students for future success through educationalexperiences grounded in student engagement.
Reporting to the Vice Provost & Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Director of the Academic Success Center will provide leadership and oversight for the department. The position is responsible for implementing, assessing, and improving diverse types of course-related academic support, such as peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, and collaborative study groups; assisting students in the transition to college-level work and the academic environment of Clemson University; identifying and supporting students who are in academic distress or who are not meeting their own academic expectations; collaborating and partnering with faculty, advisors, and administrators to coordinate a campus-wide network of academic support; supervising a professional staff; identifying opportunities to increase academic engagement in Clemson students; providing professional development and mentoring opportunities for undergraduates interested in helping their fellow students.
Successful candidates will possess a Ph.D. or Ed.D, with a minimum of five years’ experience in academic support, and have excellent communication skills.
How to apply
While applications will be accepted until a new Director is selected, interested parties are encouraged to submit electronically a cover letter, resume, and a list of references by February 15, 2013 to assure full consideration.
