Or, it could have been Michelle Doney (John Jay College of Criminal Justice/CUNY). This past October, Michelle presented an awesome ATP webinar (Assessing Effectiveness & Outcomes: Ideas for Producing Quantitative Data) in which she calculated efficiency vs effectiveness as tutoring cost per unit:
Total Cost of Production

Michelle's presentation details what goes into the numerator (fixed and/or variable costs) and denominator (per section, per student in service population, per attended appointments, etc.). She also provides some interesting research questions in an effort to demonstrate impact.

Subject: Re: ROI on Academic Support Services?
Melissa,
Possibly the person at NCLCA may have been Anton Reece from UT Knoxville's Student Success Center?
Also, you may want to review the article listed below from JDE in which "the authors present the cost/benefit of the tutoring intervention, demonstrating a surprisingly large return on the investment both to the college and society." The article provides an excellent ROI discussion based on results from the "enhanced Academic Success Center" at Seminole State College in Florida.

Hi everyone!
Someone at the NCLCA conference in Charleston this fall mentioned that their office had done an ROI on the cost of their services and what it saved the college in lost revenue, etc... I thought I got the business card of that person but I did not...
If you have done something like this can you please contact me? Our Provost is very interested in looking at something like this...
Sincerely,
Melissa
