Greetings BEST Society,
Eden Full dropped out of her studies at Princeton, but for a good
reason: to begin implementing her novel solar-tracking PV panel. The
SunSaluter is a solar panel that rotates to follow the trajectory of the
sun without the assistance of any electricity. This is accomplished
with a fairly simple water counterbalance system. Water is hung on one
side of the solar panel via large soda bottles. The inverted bottles
drip their contents slowly through a filter, both purifying the water
and tilting the panel at a consistent rate.
Full claims that the tracking mechanism of her SunSaluter improves
energy capture efficiency up to 40%. She says that it only takes 10
minutes to prepare a SunSaluter each day. It is important that this
system is simple, so that the locals can maintain it long after Full and
her team have left.
While the internet buzz regarding Full’s work has died down, the
project’s progress can be viewed on the SunSaluter Facebook page. Her
team is currently working in India, where they are utilizing local
engineering students to help implement the SunSaluter in cities and
countrysides. Meanwhile, Full herself has resumed studying at
Princeton.
