One of our tutors was also contacted with this type of scam, but we caught it before a check was sent. The person described upfront wanting money back, and the tutor came to me, and we nipped it in the bud.

We do post photos and bios., but we don't post tutors' contact information and strongly discourage any direct contact about tutoring external to the tutor's shift when private payment is not involved in an official arrangement. (Occasionally one of our enrolled students will track down the tutor's email address from an internal source and push for answers/private tutoring. Our tutors are good about bringing it to my attention so that I can intervene most of the time.)

Like a couple other folks, we do allow private tutoring with the following protocols:
1. Requests go through me so I can do an initial screening.
2. I then send the description of what the client is seeking to eligible tutors.
3. If there is a match, I put the client and the tutor in contact with each other with the following understandings:
	A. Tutoring never occurs within our departmental premises or any other tutoring area associated with our department.
	B. Tutoring does not occur during the tutor's shift.
	C. Tutoring should occur in a public space that's mutually convenient.
	D. Once I put the tutor and client in direct contact with each other, they each understand and agree that this contract, and all fees, are independent of our department and constitute a private contract between the two parties that excludes us.

We allow this service, upon request, because, exempting our Writing Lab, our tutoring options are not private. If it's slow, a student may end up in an individual session, but typically our tutors are working with three or more students at once. For students whose time is limited and/or who need more individual support, this option may be their best chance at success, particularly in a course that they are retaking.

It's worked well over the years.

Subject: Dangerous tutor scam

Hi Listers,

We took out tutors' names and contact info off of our website for the same reason that Robert did. About five years ago one of our tutors was faced with EXACTLY the same scenario. This person said they had a grandson who was coming to the US and needed tutoring. They wanted to buy X number of hours in advance and send a check for X number of dollars. When the check arrived it was for much more than the amount it should have been, the person wanted out tutor to cash the check and then send him back the amount of the overpayment. A brief description of this scam is at http://seekyt.com/tutors-beware-the-check-overpayment-scam/.

Our tutor also saw this as dubious and told the party she was no longer interested in the job. BUT, he didn't give up. He would call her up to 30 times a day, at all hours of the night, and demand that she send him a check. We called our campus police in, but they said they couldn't do anything because the guy had not made any threats. So she endured this for a while longer before he finally stopped.

I'm not suggesting that you don't post tutor info and pictures on your site (I LOVE seeing those smiling faces when I visit your websites), but PLEASE warn your tutors about this particular scam.

Best,
Saundra

Subject: Re: tutoring outside of the college's tutoring program

We have a Private Tutors referral list where tutors/students can add their contact information and the subjects they tutor. Any tutor/student can be on the list, even tutors who are currently working for me. We only ask that they donšt offer their services on days/times when free services are available in our center for the same subject. Also, I only give out the Private Tutors list by request; we used to have it posted on our website, but two tutors from the list were approached with some sketchy, possible scam-related offers, so now we track who wešve given it to.

We have a statement that was vetted by our university counsel at the top of the list, and on our website:

NOTE: The Private Tutors list is provided as a service of the Center for Academic Achievement at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). ETSU assumes no responsibility for assuring that private tutors meet certain qualifications. ETSU is not responsible for any issues, problems, or concerns that may arise between private tutors and clients. This listing service is not intended to represent any private tutor as preferred or as having attained any special recognition from ETSU. Clients are responsible for negotiating and paying private tutors directly; ETSU assumes no responsibility for determining private tutoring costs, or for the payment of private tutors.
