Hi, Amber
In a recent post, I mentioned the importance of including program
evaluation in every strategic plan. Too often, detailed plans for
program evaluation are left out of planning and only addressed later.
Program evaluation is a dynamic process with opportunities for
continuous revision. This is most important and a vital part of
strategic planning. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are
critical.
When evaluating tutoring programs, be sure not to only tie tutoring
success to grades. Too many factors other than tutoring connect to
course grades: self-efficacy beliefs, high school preparation,
classroom climate, and many others. Tutoring is only one piece of the
puzzle for academic success. Tutoring programs assessed only by course
grades are missing the mark. Instead, include several desired tutoring
outcomes (e.g. persistence, enhanced self-efficacy,personal goal
attainment, connection to the institution). The use of qualitative
methods is helpful here.
Wishing you good luck in this important endeavor!

Good afternoon,
My institution is currently in the process of writing a strategic plan
for our tutoring program. Our program was restructured and a great deal
of transition has occurred in our tutoring centers. As our tutoring
program is being rebuilt from the ground up and has not had a strategic
plan in the past, we are starting from scratch. We have been
researching, assessing, and tracking data for our tutoring program for
the past year to help us determine what improvements need to be put in
place. In addition, we have developed our mission, vision, goals, etc.
Would any of you have any guidance or resources available that might aid
us in developing our plan moving forward?
Thank you for your time and sharing in your wisdom and experience.
Sincerely,
Amber Wheeler
