Hi all,
I received the request below from a math grad student. Any ideas=97especial=
ly for technology and resources=97would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nic
=93I really don't have problems understanding what I read or learning or
thinking about my field (mathematics) but I struggle a lot when I have
to produce. It is as if I had a lot of ideas in my head but then when
it comes the moment to write them down (translate them into something
readable) I can't. I guess it is sort of a writer's block, and I was
wondering if you have some resources or strategies I could use.
I have even considered using some sort of recorder/transcriber but as
far as I know there is nothing like that that writes down mathematical
formulas. Still, sometimes I need to write down my ideas to polish the
details, but I don't know how to. Is there anything you could
recommend me to read?"

THE HISTORY OF ACTLA:
The Association of Colleges for Tutoring and Learning Assistance (ACTLA) wa=
s organized in 1973 with the purpose of improving tutorial programs and ser=
vices in California Community Colleges. The first conference was held at Al=
lan Hancock College in Santa Maria on May 2, 1974. Through 1983 the organiz=
ation was called the California Community College Tutorial Association (CCC=
TA). Beginning in 1984, with the intention of including all institutions of=
higher education in California, the name changed to the Association of Cal=
ifornia Colleges for Tutoring and Learning Assistance (ACCTLA). In the summ=
er of 2002 a strategic planning committee of the executive board approved a=
final name change to the Association of Colleges for Tutoring and Learning=
Assistance (ACTLA). More than 30 years after its inception ACTLA is now a =
national organization but retains its original purpose: improving tutorial =
programs and related services.

Subject: Re: Tech Tools & Strategies for externalizing or producing mathematical ideas
I am not a math person, but as an English person, I encourage my students to just put pencil to paper, even if it is nonsense. Eventually, things start clicking. Personally, I've written over and over for a good 10-15 minutes, "I don't know what to write" until finally my brains engages. Could the same type skill be transferable to math?

Subject: Tech Tools & Strategies for externalizing or producing mathematical ideas
Hi all,
I received the request below from a math grad student. Any ideas-especially for technology and resources-would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nic
"I really don't have problems understanding what I read or learning or thinking about my field (mathematics) but I struggle a lot when I have to produce. It is as if I had a lot of ideas in my head but then when it comes the moment to write them down (translate them into something
readable) I can't. I guess it is sort of a writer's block, and I was wondering if you have some resources or strategies I could use.
I have even considered using some sort of recorder/transcriber but as far as I know there is nothing like that that writes down mathematical formulas. Still, sometimes I need to write down my ideas to polish the details, but I don't know how to. Is there anything you could recommend me to read?"

Personally, I can say that the most useful technology I had as a graduate student in mathematics was a large whiteboard in my home.
As a professional, I cannot tell from the information provided whether the student's difficulty is really with communicating a reasonably-well-formulated idea, or whether it is with the kind of problem-solving (typically proof-writing) required at the graduate level. More inquiry is probably required to sort this out.

This doesn't have tools per se, but it does give good advice that might be
helpful:

Dear all,
We have cameras and use them. We have posted, visible signs stating "Security Videos Surveillance in Use on These Premises." We use the cameras when all 20 computer stations are in use and/or when only 1 proctor is working. At this time, we are asking for an upgrade and are hoping the requested is accepted.
Thanks!

We use the same system that Sylvia mentioned below. We have found that the incidents of cheating have dropped off SIGNIFICANTLY since the installation of the cameras. The cameras have also reduced the need for extra staffing (proctors) and students find them less invasive than a person watching them while they test.

Subject: Re: Tech Tools & Strategies for externalizing or producing mathematical ideas
The problem could be the "divide" between math concepts and English words.
I can be "in the zone" solving a math problem, or working on a math proof
and I'm not thinking in English words. In fact, I have to stop and "switch
brains" just to answer the phone.
A "basic idea" concept map might help. A big flow chart sort of thing, "If
I start here and I want to get there, I know I want to use (or need to use)
---- to get -----.
Bridging the gap between ideas, words and writing can be a challenge.
Non-verbal drawings might jump-start the process. Fill in the words later.
Just a thought. Good luck.

This is excellent information, Leonard, and exactly what faculty are looking for. I think it's really important for us to understand that faculty don't want us to talk to them about how to teach better (although many certainly need that!); they want us to help them understand the learning process and give them strategies for helping students learn. It may seem like a minor distinction, but I've found that it makes the difference between giving a workshop that is well received by faculty and one that is not

FYI — A few people have told me that the video on Teaching Students How to Learn abruptly stopped the 15 minute mark. However, downloading the video provided them access to the full 25 minute video.

Hi Kim and other Colleagues,
The best way I can answer your question via this forum is to offer the following simple, yet effective strategies that are founded upon sound evidence. Teaching students to learn really involves:
helping students become aware of how they’ve been learning and are learning in other contexts, providing structured, sequential processes for them to navigate their interactions between the course content as they execute their study routine, and offering models of what they can expect as they learn new material.
It would be too long to express in this forum, so I created a short screen-presentation in response to your question: http://bit.ly/teaching_students_to_learn_screen_cast. I hope it’s useful.
Good luck!

Greetings,
I am developing a workshop for faculty on teaching students how to learn. If you have done something like this in the past, I would appreciate your suggestions.
Kind regards,
Kim
