Thank you for the information.
Now for the answer to your question....We are a small (6500 give or take)two-year community college. Through cooperation and sharing expenses with Clemson University, we are able to offer Supplemental Instruction (SI) on our campus with peer tutors who are all students (so far) at Clemson. They are recruited and trained by Clemson.
Our tutors are professional tutors, including retirees, adjuncts, Clemson graduate students, and three Clemson undergrads. Most of the 29 professional tutors have master's degrees. Their hours vary from 4/week to 25/week at three campuses.
We are just beginning the process of ATP level one certification for the professional tutors. We selected ATP for several reasons: we can do it, it is less expensive than CRLA, etc. Also, I am currently the only full-time employee in the Tutoring Center.
The goal is to have most tutors participate; some will not. At this point, we are not requiring it. After all, we pay $14/hour to many people who do not have to work and who may choose to move on. We are just beginning this process of certification.
We are also just beginning to collect substantive data. We have always known how many people came for tutoring, but that was about it. The Tutoring Center has grown so much in the past five years.
I hope this helps.

Hi Pat:
I am new in my position, 2 months, as Director of the Academic Resource Center (ARC). At our 4 year College, which grants both AS and BS degrees, primarily in healthcare fields, we pulled together the tutors and advisors under one umbrella: ARC. These folks used to report to different levels of administrative staff, in different college areas, which was very confusing. Now we have 4 tutors and 3 advisors reporting to one Director, my position. We are organizationally placed under the Dean of General Studies. However, we have Student Affairs that reports to a different dean, VP of Student Services. Student affairs also includes the Office of Student Accommodations.
Even though we made one organizational change there are still support services for students in other areas. It is too early for me to say pros and cons about our change. But, staff in the ARC report being satisfied with the current new arrangement because now they feel as if they are a group; we can discuss and problem solve together. So after 2 months only, the change is viewed positively. We shall see how this plays out over time.
I have only done some searching on the web about possible organizational structures and have found that there are many out there..... some very broad, which includes Library and such, and I have found smaller organizational structures like the one we have. I did not find which one was best.....
A question for you: do you have any thoughts on tutor certification?
Best wishes as you seek your answers.

The Tutoring Center at TCTC (a two-year community college) currently is in Support and Engagement and reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Support and Engagement. To whom do your learning centers/tutoring centers report? What are the pros and cons of reporting to and being part of the campus library, Student Development, academics? What is the best situation?
