DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor Student Retention & Success (AVC SRS), the Director is responsible for leading and implementing a comprehensive range of student success units, programs and initiatives including the newly established Student Success Coaching program. The Director will provide oversight to three unique units that support several distinctive student populations at UC San Diego and provide support to the AVC SRS for project management, advancing strategic initiatives, and other administrative tasks within the SRS team. The student success programs (Units) include the Undocumented Student Services Center (USSC), the Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC), and the Student Success Coaching (SSC) program. The Director is charged with managing complex administrative roles in support of a comprehensive range of student development services and provides direct support to the AVC while implementing strategic projects and collaborations to fulfill the overall goals of the Student Retention & Success Cluster.

The role will support the efforts of the AVC by ensuring that all services, activities and programming delivered from SRS are high quality, coordinated, and aligned with the best practices that promote undergraduate student retention, persistence, and graduation rates for targeted student populations. Exercises leadership and discretionary authority to solve managerial and programmatic concerns; utilize a high degree of independence, ingenuity and analytical skills to resolve complex problems.

The position serves as a campus champion for the success and retention of distinctive student populations as well as all UC San Diego students and requires communication and partnership with campus constituents including the six colleges' academic, student affairs and residence life units, the Center for Engaged Learning within the Teaching and Learning Commons, Academic Affairs units, and the office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The Director will develop, maintain, and continuously monitor student learning outcomes and lead program evaluation analyses for the SRS Cluster while establishing practices and policies that enrich the student experience from initial enrollment through to graduation. Responsible for the initiation, development, management, evaluation and promotion of research informed needs, activities, and programs that support the success of distinctive student population served by each unit. Ensure that SRS services support the academic and psycho-educational success of students that have unique strengths, needs, or expectations. Populations include students from educationally or economically disadvantaged backgrounds, historically underrepresented students, first generation college students, military affiliated and undocumented or mixed immigration status students, foster youth, and others.

In addition, the Director is charged with the development, implementation, and evaluation of a newly established Student Success Coaching program that is being launched in fall 2016. The program will serve incoming and continuing UC San Diego students from disadvantaged backgrounds; supporting their transition and enhancing their campus experience through planning, goal setting, and the use of essential learning strategies that promote retention, success, and progress toward graduation. The Success Coaching program is grounded in proactive and appreciative education approaches and uses a strengths based model to foster the success of undergraduate students who are first generation, who may face academic challenges, or who are recipients of selected institutional or community based scholarships.

The scope of this position is broad and is responsible for mission critical activities that contribute to the retention and time to degree goals of the Chancellor's strategic plan. Serves as facilitator to resolve student obstacles by triaging student concerns and coordinating an action plan that involves key campus constituents and increases persistence toward graduation.



SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

*         Master's degree and 5 years of management experience or Bachelor's degree and 8 years management experience in a university environment. Demonstrated leadership in college-level student support services and the management of student services units.

*         Demonstrated understanding of the importance of organizational structure, resource management, communication, and protocol when implementing a solution. Proven ability to provide leadership that motivates and promotes team building and creates a positive work environment.

*         Excellent organizational and time management skills to establish goals and prioritize workload of self and others; ability to meet deadlines; ability to work efficiently and effectively on multiple projects with competing deadlines; flexibility in dealing with people and competing demands; ability to manage details of complex projects and events and to independently follow through to successful completion.

*         Solid knowledge of undergraduate and graduate student development theories and principles of higher education to explain college student behavior, including psychosocial theories, cognitive theories, and integrative theories.

*         Proven skill using effective pedagogical strategies for designing, planning, and implementing academic support programs or underrepresented, multicultural and other non-traditional student populations.

*         Skilled in student development and counseling; verified ability to develop positive mentoring/coaching relationships with diverse student populations.

*         Demonstrated record of achievement in analyzing (existing and proposed) programs and initiatives, recognizing complex interactions and potential impact, and making recommendations.

*         Successful experience in forming collaborative partnerships with campus departments and off-campus organizations in developing programs and services.

*         Demonstrated ability to compile and analyze data, to prepare information and summary and/or reports of findings relevant to areas of oversight and student success coaching programmatic impact.

*         Knowledge of personnel management and campus personnel policies, procedures, collective bargaining, and employee development opportunities. Experience working in a large, complex, multi-disciplinary academic environment, including familiarity with campus-wide offices, administrative contacts, and campus structures.

*         Demonstrated high level of skill and experience in public speaking, teaching, and training with the ability to lead and facilitate effective group activities. Demonstrated substantial knowledge and experience with the application of intergroup relations and adult learning theory to teaching/training situations. Demonstrated ability to effectively and sensitively communicate, and to establish relationships of trust, with a diverse multi-cultural population including parents, students, school officials, employers, staff, and faculty.
