The effect of ecological network structure on the dynamics, stability, and, ultimately, diversity of ecological communities has been the center of an ongoing debate in the past 45 years. Several authors hypothesized that the observed departures from random structure observed in ecological networks are therefore "adaptive". Indeed, a common hypothesis is that biological network structure is influenced by evolution, coevolution and/or adaptation: structures yielding unfavorable dynamics would be eliminated from the space of possible networks, so that in nature we would tend to observe structures that have withstood the test of time. An alternative view is the "network spandrel" hypothesis - a nod to the famous critique of the adaptionist programme by Gould and Lewontin: deviations from randomness in biological networks are the by-product of the network assembly process, and are therefore non-adaptive. While the implications of network structure for community/population
dynamics are well studied, we know very little regarding the effect of dynamics on the structure of networks. The goal of this satellite is to explore how these two alternative processes contribute to the structure of biological networks and to explore whether, and how, they can be disentangled. This debate is crucial for our understanding of network assembly in particular and for understanding processes of network optimization in nature in general. The satellite we are proposing will not only spark a new debate in biology, but is also highly relevant for other disciplines because understanding the relationship between structure and dynamics is a cornerstone of every complex adaptive system.

Introduction to focus issue: Synchronization in large networks and continuous media˙˙data, models, and supermodels

    The synchronization of loosely coupled chaotic systems has increasingly found applications to large networks of differential equations and to models of continuous media. These applications are at the core of the present Focus Issue. Synchronization between a system and its model, based on limited observations, gives a new perspective on data assimilation. Synchronization among different models of the same system defines a supermodel that can achieve partial consensus among models that otherwise disagree in several respects. Finally, novel methods of time series analysis permit a better description of synchronization in a system that is only observed partially and for a relatively short time. This Focus Issue discusses synchronization in extended systems or in components thereof, with particular attention to data assimilation, supermodeling, and their applications to various areas, from climate modeling to macroeconomics.

Although complexity surrounds us, its inherent uncertainty, ambiguity, and contradiction can at first make complex systems appear inscrutable. Ecosystems, for instance, are nonlinear, self-organizing, seemingly chaotic structures in which individuals interact both with each other and with the myriad biotic and abiotic components of their surroundings across geographies as well as spatial and temporal scales. In the face of such complexity, ecologists have long sought tools to streamline and aggregate information. Among them, in the 1980s, T. F. H. Allen and Thomas B. Starr implemented a burgeoning concept from business administration: hierarchy theory. Cutting-edge when Hierarchy was first published, their approach to unraveling complexity is now integrated into mainstream ecological thought.

This thoroughly revised and expanded second edition of Hierarchy reflects the assimilation of hierarchy theory into ecological research, its successful application to the understanding of complex systems, and the many developments in thought since.
