DESCRIPTION
The Connected Learning Lab within the Donald Bren School of Information 
and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine is seeking 
applicants for a postdoctoral scholar position. The position is part of a 
National Science Foundation funded project to investigate how informal 
programs can broaden participation by building social capital in STEM for 
youth from underrepresented groups. The project integrates social network 
analysis with research on informal learning, and draws on the “connected 
learning” framework for how to support diverse learners and connect 
learning across settings. The scholar will work with Dr. Mizuko Ito and a 
research team of graduate and undergraduate students. Research will 
include fieldwork in informal learning programs in Orange County and 
possibly Los Angeles County; management and analysis of quantitative and 
qualitative datasets; writing of reports, articles, and presentations; 
translating research for broader audiences through blogs and reports; 
supervising undergraduate and graduate student researchers; and overseeing 
the submission and updating of human subjects protocols. Research, design, 
and writing will be conducted as part of a collaborative team effort with 
the principal investigator and others involved in the Lab.
The position will begin Fall 2018 or January 2019 and continue for one 
year, with possible renewal for two additional years dependent upon 
satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Annual salary 
ranges from $53,184 to $57,528 depending on experience.
Requirements: Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline or 
field, such as Anthropology, Sociology, or Education. Research background 
should include areas such as learning sciences, social inequity, social 
network analysis, youth studies, and informal learning. Preference will be 
given to applicants who have experience managing data and analyzing 
quantitative datasets using social network analysis. It is preferred that 
applicants have demonstrated success presenting and publishing journal 
articles. Fluency in Spanish is desirable. Evidence of collaborative and 
mixed methods research will also be valued. Driving in the Southern 
California region and travel may be required in this position to perform 
research, present results, and meet with collaborators.
