Subject: POSITIONS AVAILABLE

South Seattle Community College in Seattle, Washington is seeking
candidates to apply for two full-time, temporary, professional positions
it the College's new Upward Bound program. Continuation of this position
beyond the year 2000, is contingent upon funding.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Develops curriculum in consultation with the Director
and teaches Upward Bound classes to project participants at target high
schools during the academic year and at South Seattle Community College
during the summer component. Provides academic advising, personal
counseling, financial aid and college admission assistance to project
participants at assigned target schools. Coordinates career-related and
cultural activities for Upward Bound participants.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Works under the general supervision of the
Upward Bound Director at South Seattle Community College. Provides
supervision to tutors when assigned. Develops and implements outreach
strategies. Conducts eligibility and needs assessment interviews.
Conducts parent interview. Selects those students who are appropriate
based on criteria. Teaches Upward Bound classes during the academic year
and summer components. Works with Director to develop summer and
academic year curriculum for classes to be taught. In cooperation with
the Upward Bound Director and target school counselors, develops and
individualized learning program for project participants assigned.
Maintains up-to-date files on students, including documentation of
student performance. Participates in field trips, special events
(including evening and weekend), and overnight trips or residencies.
Supervises project participants during all project activities. Serves as
liaison with target school during the academic year. Attends weekly
Upward Bound staff meetings and high school departmental meetings at the
target school assigned to review student progress and target school
policies and procedures. Develops and administers pre/post tests for
courses taught. Administers standardized tests. Meets individually with
students on a regular basis to discuss academic and post-secondary
planning, behavior, and other concerns; contacts parents as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a college or university with a
degree in math, English, social science or a comparable field. Secondary
or community college teaching credential; teaching experience. Must pass
Washington State Patrol criminal records check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: MA or MS in education, guidance and
counseling, or a related field. Two years experience in educational or
human services programs, experience performing academic and/or personal
needs assessment, counseling and advising, teaching, program development
and evaluation. Experience cousneling or providing direct services to
disadvantaged populations through education or human services programs.

SALARY: The starting salary will be commensurate to overall education
and experience.
